Summer may still feel like a lifetime away, but on a winter holiday to the Algarve, you don’t have to wait to have some fun in the sun! For starters, the sun shines all year round here, and with less crowds, it’s the ideal time to explore.
Whether it’s relaxation or all-out adventure you’re after, the amazing Algarve is calling your name!
Not convinced? Here are just some of the reasons why you should visit the Algarve this winter…
The weather
Because you just can’t rely on British weather, especially in winter. On average, the Algarve boasts 300 days of sunshine a year, so there's no shortage of balmy days, making it a perfect escape from the UK's cold, wet, and often gloomy winter weather. Some even say it’s a much more comfortable climate during winter months, compared to the scorching summer temperatures.
Top tip: As the sun goes down, evenings can get cooler, so it’s best to take a light jacket.
It’s great for golf
For any keen golfers out there, you’ve just found paradise. The Algarve is home to a great selection of championship and top-ranked courses, where you can while away a day practising your swing in spectacular surroundings, and most importantly, in the sunshine! To be more precise, you’ll have more than 40 golf courses to choose from.
With bunkers, doglegs and obstacles galore, these pristine greens are suitable for both beginners, pros and everyone in between. And after perfecting those golf skills out on the course, is there anything better than an ice-cold pint in the clubhouse? You could celebrate a win and dine al fresco on a picturesque terrace or retreat to an on-site spa and massage away those aches and pains.
There are plenty of courses dotted across this varied region, but swanky Vilamoura is probably your best bet when it comes to choosing where to stay for a golfing getaway. And when you’re not out there aiming for a hole in one, there’s a yacht-filled marina lined with high-end bars and restaurants to check out.
Fun fact: Vilamoura hosts the Portugal Masters each year!
There are so many opportunities for walking and hiking
Love nothing more than pulling on your walking boots and heading out on an outdoor adventure? You’ve come to the right place! This pretty part of Portugal has routes and paths for all sorts of abilities, and did we mention the views? Whatever direction you head in, you’re pretty much guaranteed to see something sensational. We’re talking sea vistas, majestic mountains and traditional towns with maze-like streets. Here are two of our favourites:
Ponta da Piedade
In Lagos, over to the west, the striking Ponta da Piedade is a lovely spot for an afternoon stroll. With rugged, ochre-hued cliffs, this dramatic headland really dazzles. Stroll along the coastal path at the top for beautiful views out to the turquoise sea, before zig-zagging down the steps to a stunning cove, where the Atlantic waves swirl and sea foam sprays against the rocks.
Ria Formosa Natural Park
Nearer to Faro, Ria Formosa Natural Park is a quiet slice of the coastline, where natural beauty hogs the limelight. You can navigate the patchwork of island lagoons, marshes and beaches on foot or by boat. It’s a popular spot for birdwatching too, so pack your binoculars and keep a look out for the flamingos!
Top tip: Remember to wear sturdy, comfortable shoes with good grip, as many trails, especially along the coast, can be rocky and uneven. It’s also a good idea to bring plenty of water, sunscreen and a hat, as, the sun can be strong, even in winter!
You can explore on two wheels
Want to see more of this part of the world than you would on two feet? Take on a two-wheeled adventure instead! Cycling in the Algarve couldn’t be more accessible, with coastal routes and inland trails dotted throughout. Whether you’re a seasoned professional or a family who are just trying to get active and explore, there are options for all ages and abilities.
Fun fact: The Algarve’s temperatures are in the mid to high teens throughout winter, so it’s an ideal climate for cyclists.
You’ll tantalise your taste buds
Influenced heavily by the Mediterranean, Portuguese cuisine is big on bold flavours. But it’s best known for its seafood, all thanks to its Atlantic surroundings. Whatever you do, don’t miss out on sampling fresh catches of the day – especially sardines! Herbs and spices are essential too, and often make up the famous sauces like peri-peri.
Fun fact: Peri-peri chicken that we know and love originates from the Algarve! Be sure to try some at its most authentic while you’re here.
Not forgetting those local tipples!
This sun-speckled region is famed for its wine production and all types are whipped up here. Crisp whites, deep reds and refreshing rosés! Ask your waiter for perfect pairing recommendations while you dine or for the full experience, try a wine tasting!
There are award-winning vineyards all over the region, most are off-the-beaten-track and set among rolling green hills a little further inland from the coast. During a wine tasting session, you’ll get to learn about the whole process, from grape growing to bottling, and meet the expert wine producers along the way. A lot are still family-runso you can uncover the fascinating heritage too.
Fun fact: Buying a bottle directly from the winery is much cheaper than in shops – stock up or bring some back as a souvenir.
