Welcome to İzmir, a vibrant part of Turkey (Türkiye) that’s just waiting to be explored. And when you’ve got the whole family in tow too, it can be even more exciting and action-packed!

From time-worn historical sights to all-out adventure-filled attractions, here are just a handful of the things that will attract you and your family to this terrific Turkish region...

İzmir Seferihisar Ekmeksiz Tabiat Parkı blue flagged

Blue Voyage boat cruises

Want to explore offshore as well as on land while you’re away? Feel like an explorer for the day as you cruise along the picturesque Turquoise Coast, gliding through the Aegean Sea with ease.

See all sorts of interesting things along the way, like hidden coves and secluded bays and you might even get the chance to swim, snorkel or scuba dive to spot colourful fish and shipwrecks below the surface. Prefer to stay dry? You can kick back onboard and feel the sea breeze through your hair.

Castle new

Kuşadasi Castle

This dramatic fortress sits on miniature ‘Pigeon Island’ and is connected to the mainland by a small causeway. It’s also known as the Pirate Castle after it was built back in the 16th century by the military to protect Kuşadasi’s harbour from marine attacks.

Inside, there’s a fascinating museum waiting for you! There are a number of steep stairways dotted throughout, so wear comfy shoes if you’re wanting to have a good wander. Passing by at night? Snap some unique photos as you’ll see it lit up in all its glory. The best bit about it is that it’s completely free to enter!

İzmir Çeşme Ilıca Beach 8

Beaches with thermal waters

Is there anything better than dipping your toes in the sea and it being toasty and warm? We thought not! In Cesme, you’ll come across lots of naturally heated pools and springs. They can be icy cold (perfect for a cool down on a scorching summer’s day) or anything up to around 90°C!

What’s more, most of these balmy, sandy spots come with their own thermal springs and natural mud baths, so it’s swimming, sunbathing and a spa day all rolled into one!

İzmir Şirince Genel 1

Traditional Turkish villages
Feel like you’ve taken a step back in time as you wander the cobbled streets of an olde worlde local village. Take Şirince, for example, which is about a 30-minute drive from Kuşadasi. You can really get a taste of local life as there are only around 600 people who live there! Plus, the name Şirince is taken from the Turkish word Şirin’, which means ‘cute’, so you just know it’s going to be pretty.

Terracotta-topped houses are built into the hillsides of Selçuk, hiding a world of treasures in its maze of streets below. Bob in and out of quaint boutique shops and traditional restaurants and chat to the locals as you go. The smell of zesty spices and punchy Turkish coffee floats through the streets, so you won’t be able to resist sampling something. There’s even a mosque you can visit too. For Turkish charm and character, you simply can’t miss this one.

İzmir Wildlife Park 2

İzmir Wildlife Park

Get up close and admire more than 130 different species at this varied, well-maintained wildlife park. See everything from tiny birds to giant giraffes and big cats to colourful reptiles! Friendly staff are on hand if you have any questions and there’s a handy little café serving up snacks and ice creams for when you need to cool off.

The park’s open daily and entry prices are really reasonable, so it’s a great choice for a fun day out for all the family. Animal lovers in your group too? This one’s definitely for you.

New

Amazing cuisine

Love to try all the local food when you’re away? You’ve hit the jackpot here in İzmir, as there’s a huge variety on the menu and it’s a real treat for all the senses – even for the fussiest eaters. Zingy salads, freshly baked bread and traditional meze spring to mind when you think of Turkish dishes, but there’s a whole host of lesser-known treats to try too.

Take menemen for example, the country’s answer to scrambled eggs, which is filled with sautéed peppers, onions and tomatoes. Scoop it all up with a slice of crusty bread and you’re onto a breakfast winner.

İzmir Efes Antik Kenti Odeon 1

The ancient city of Ephesus

And last, but most certainly not least, is this time-worn wonder. The famous ancient city of Ephesus is awash with well-preserved ruins that will have you gazing in awe – so much so, it was awarded UNESCO World Heritage status in 2015 and it attracts millions of visitors each year from across the world. Got some mini history hunters in your family? They’ll love this one!
