The culture

This region’s a hotspot for history hunters – it is Aristotle’s birthplace after all. Whizz back in time to the 7th century BC with a visit to Ancient Olynthos. Roam the ruins which tell the tale of a once grand city or admire the well-preserved mosaics. Petralona Cave, due to reopen in Summer 2023, is another gem to add to your itinerary. It’s bejewelled with stalagmites and stalactites and is one of the oldest archaeological sites in Europe. The museum here is equally as fascinating, full of fossils and a skull which scientists estimate is around 700,000 years old! If you manage to tick off all of Halkidiki’s highlights on your trip, Thessaloniki’s museums and galleries are within day-tripping distance too.

The cuisine

This piece of Greece has stacks to boast about when it comes to culinary credentials. Grilled anchovies? Marinated mackerel? Sun-toasted octopus? Seafood is definitely the star of the show, so grab a seat in a waterfront restaurant and get ready for a fresh fish feast. And if you’re travelling in July, don’t miss the annual sardine festival that takes place in Nea Moudania.

Not a fish fan? Don’t worry! The traditional tavernas here are fired by local produce and seasonal ingredients that let the fabulous flavours do the talking. Dolmadakia (stuffed vine leaves) and hearty lamb fricassee with avgolemono (egg and lemon sauce) are just two of the must-eats on the menu.

The scenery

No matter which part of the peninsula you pick, postcard-perfect views are waiting to greet you around every turn. Along the coast, a string of charming fishing villages perch on chalk-white cliffs, lapped by azure waters. Inland, sleepy villages hug the hilltops and pretty peaks provide a standout setting for adventurous activities.

The experiences

All eyes are on the Aegean here, so it’s no surprise that water-based pursuits reign supreme. Below the shimmering surface, an underwater world tempts avid snorkellers. Dive deeper and you’ll spot the rippling anemones that carpet the seabed and schools of sea bass and rainbow wrasse darting among them.

Beyond the sea and sand, active-types won’t have to venture far to get their fresh-air fix. Hikers and cyclists will find lots of marked trails, ranging from challenging routes through the Holomontas Mountains to leisurely pathways along the coast.

The resorts

Halkidiki’s got resorts of every shape and size, so there’s a spot to suit every traveller. In Kassandra, Pefkohori serves up non-stop fun in the sun, thanks to its cream coastline, hefty helping of beach bars and smattering of trendy restaurants. But you can easily escape the hustle and bustle around these parts too. Take the charming village of Paliouri, where days are spent lounging in leisure or quaint Afitos, which is geared up for go-slow getaways.

Sithonia’s rugged good looks go hand in hand with sporty stays, but it’s also a fabulous find for families. Lagomandra’s sure to wow with its snow-white beach backed by the towering Itamos Mountains. Gerakina’s a winner too, surrounded by nuggets of nature, yet just an hour’s drive from Thessaloniki.

The beaches

For beach bums, it doesn’t get much better than Halkidiki’s 500km of coastal real estate. There’s a remarkable range to choose from, whether you’re after a serene swim spot, a secluded suntrap or a popular patch with a bit of a buzz. Kriopigi Beach, on Kassandra’s east coast, is one of the top picks. It’s a Blue Flag beauty with lots of shady spots, ideal for lazy afternoons getting stuck into a good book. If you’re travelling with the whole clan, make a beeline for Chrousso Beach. Sandwiched between the villages of Paliouri and Pefkohori, this bay is nice and sheltered, ideal for tots. Sithonia’s sands are typically wilder and more windswept, and in many cases, you’re likely to have a patch of paradise all to yourself.

The nightlife

If you’re looking for neon-lit nightlife, point your dancing feet in the direction of resorts like Sani and Pefkohori. They are both chock-full of bars and clubs which tend to get lively after 11pm. Come sunset, the bounty of beach bars come into their own, with DJs playing until the early hours. If your ideal evening is more on the mellow side, there are plenty of cocktail bars where you can munch on meze while listening to live music.
