Taormina

This coastal spot is one of the island’s biggest draws and its maze of winding streets hide a world of authentic treasures. Whether you want to sightsee, eat, drink or shop, you’ll find it all here. Historic sites dot the town, traditional trattorias are around every corner and cute cafés and bakeries are plentiful – there’s a cannoli flavour to suit every kind of palate.

One to visit: The ancient Greek theatre. This crumbling structure dates back to the third century BC and from the impressive auditorium and stage, you can enjoy stunning views out to sea below.

Taormina’s coastal counterpart boasts a quaint pebbled shore and a much more chilled-out atmosphere than the town above. Around the two horseshoe-shaped bays, you’ll see a handful of traditional hotels and family-run bars and restaurants. The magical island of Isola Bella is just out to sea and when the tide allows, you can wander right across to it.

After a balmy beach break? Look no further than lovely Letojanni. It’s got a laid-back vibe that goes perfectly with the sand, sea and sunshine setting. The main stretch of sand, Letojanni Beach, has a sand and shingle shore but reaches along the coast for several kilometres so there’s plenty of space to spread out.

Where to relax: Lido Tropicana. This welcoming beach club has a bar and restaurant as well as a private stretch of beach where you can hire a lounger for the day and spread out under the rays.

The best bit: The floating city of Ortigia. Well, technically it’s connected to the mainland by two bridges, but it’s a dreamy place to explore.
