When it comes to glorious Greek getaways, Kos has more than a few tricks up its beach-bejewelled sleeves. We’re talking centuries-old relics, buzzy promenades and soft sands by the bucket (and spade) load. Wondering where’s best to base yourself? Resorts range from laid-back to lively, so let’s help you find your favourite…

Kos Town
For culture vultures
The island’s capital is big on history and heritage, from its ancient architecture to its remarkable ruins. Make a start at Kos Town Cathedral and admire the ornate paintings and marble floors. You can peep further into the past at the Western Archaeological Zone, which is home to around 30 major monuments. Let the buzzy bars and clubs transport you back to modernity, or haggle for bargains at Eleftherias Square market.

Kardamena
For night owls
After-dark activities are Kardamena’s specialty, with a great selection of bars and restaurants to choose from. Make your way along aptly named Bar Street and mingle with the locals, or enjoy a side of sea views with your shimmying down at the waterfront. There are plenty of places to rest and recharge during the day, including golden Kardamena Beach. Get stuck into some water sports or simply sit back and drink in the views.

Tingaki
For sun-seekers
If chilling out is top of your holiday agenda, then Tingaki’s the resort for you. Days revolve around the 3km-long strip of Blue Flag sand, so pitch up with a good book and soak up the sunshine. Evenings are on the low-key side, best spent dining on island delicacies in one of the traditional tavernas. Kos Town is only a 20-minute taxi ride away if you do fancy turning up the tempo.

Psalidi
For the best of both worlds
Go-slow is Psalidi’s default setting, but you’ll also have Kos Town on your doorstep, which means you can do as little or as much as you like. The pretty promenade is made for meandering and there’s a pebble beach to sprawl on too. You’re also not far from Therma Beach, where you can simmer in hot springs.

Kefalos
For foodies
Greece is one of the gastronomic greats, and Kefalos is the ideal place to sample it. Meze platters? Net-fresh seafood? Golden olive oil? You can try it all in the range of restaurants. Look out for krasotyri (goat’s cheese matured in wine) on the menu. See off that post lunch slump with a stroll along Kamari Beach. This sandy spot is popular with windsurfers, so why not give it a go?

Lambi
For R&R
Tucked-away on the north-east coast, Lambi ticks all the boxes for a restful retreat. The blissful beachfront beckons for lazy days and the water is crystal-clear and perfect for paddling. For a change of pace, hire a bike and pedal to the nearby village of Tingaki. You could even tick off two countries in one trip, as Bodrum’s just a half-an-hour ferry away.

Marmari
For stunning scenery
This west-coast wonder, sandwiched between Mastichari and Tingaki, is as picturesque as they come. Along the waterfront, you’ll spy a handful of shops, bars and restaurants. The beach is its crowning glory, a 2km-long sweep studded with sunloungers.

Agios Fokas
For a taste of tradition
Agios Fokas showcases authentic Greece at its finest. Relish being away from the hustle and bustle and embrace the tranquil pace of life here. The black-sand beach attracts snorkellers with its crystal-clear waters, and there’s a beach bar if you get a little peckish. It’s also a great springboard for exploring some of the island’s other resorts.

Mastichari
For adventure-seekers
Mastichari is a tale of two halves. On the one hand, it’s a haven for kitesurfers and windsurfers who can’t get enough of whizzing across the waves. On the other, it’s a chilled-out base for families and couples. Kids young and old will love the Lido Waterpark, while history buffs will be fascinated by the Hippocrates Garden Cultural Centre.
