Welcome to captivating Kefalonia, Greece’s biggest island! So as you can imagine, there’s a whole host of stunning spots to choose from when it comes to holidaying here. That’s where we come in. Read our guide on where to stay in Kefalonia and you’ll be sorted in no time…
Argostoli
As Kefalonia’s cool capital, Argostoli has a real modern and cosmopolitan feel in comparison to the rest of the island. The port’s main streets are jam-packed with quirky galleries, cosy wine bars and quaint boutiques, so you can while away the days as you wander and browse.
Hop down to the harbour to see local fishermen bring in their catch of the day or stroll along at night and see luxury yachts bobbing in the water. Blue Flag Platis Gialos Beach is nearby and there’s a stunning lagoon at the end of the harbour, which is famed for loggerhead turtles, so keep your eyes peeled!
Skala
Beach bums, this one’s for you! The sand-and-shingle shore here stretches for an impressive 3km and is backed by pretty pine trees – sounds like the perfect sunbathing setting to us! On clear days, you can even see across the glittering Ionian Sea to mainland Greece.
As night falls, the town’s traditional tavernas and beach bars come to life with live music and that famous and friendly Greek hospitality. Fancy a bit of history? Head up to Old Skala and see what's left of the village that was destroyed by the 1953 earthquake.
Trapezaki
For a more get-away-from-it-all feel, make a beeline for Trapezaki. Its tranquil bay shows off blissful aquamarine waters in style and the lush green trees in the background just set it all off beautifully. Swim or snorkel in these crystal-clear waters or jump on a boat trip to admire the resort from the sea.
The bars and restaurants are as traditional as they come, serving everything from freshly-chopped Greek salads and juicy gyros to succulent souvlaki and syrupy baklava. All washed down with a glass of local Kefalonian wine, of course!
Svoronata
Over on the west of the island, you’ll find serene Svoronata, a dinky village that lies around 2km inland. This gorgeous Greek countryside is made up of vast open fields peppered with rich olive groves and juicy fruit trees. Potter around the charming streets or visit the monastery to soak up some culture.
If you’re a fan of a short airport transfer, then you’ll love Svoronata, as it’s only a five-minute drive from Kefalonia Airport. How’s that for handy!
Lourdas
Last but not least, we reach Lourdas, a hillside haven on the south coast. It’s set around one of the biggest and best bays on the island which has soft golden sand that’s perfect for sunbathing. There’s a sprinkling of beach bars and cafés just off the shore too, serving up those all-important drinks to keep you cool.
You couldn’t be better placed if you like getting out and exploring the local area. A handful of towns and villages are right on your doorstep, so why not hire a car and head out for the day to see what you can discover?
