Lanzarote

You can be lazy in Lanzarote in the winter months, as the beaches still twinkle in the sun and the rays can reach highs of 20°C. Its mix of time-treasured, traditional resorts and modern towns make it a great choice for exploration. And as it won’t be as bustling in January, you can head off on days of discovery to incredible sites such as the otherworldly Timanfaya National Park. Madeira

Make for Madeira this new year and explore a gorgeous green island that’s just off the north-west coast of Africa. In January, temperatures average around the high teens, so it’s all about soaking up the balmy sunshine while it’s cold and dreary back home. Take on the scenic levada walking trails, admire colourful flowers and botanical gardens, and check out the buzzy capital, Funchal.
