Snow is a rare sight in the UK and when it finally blesses us with its presence, it’s usually gone pretty quickly too. Fancy enjoying a truly white winter? These European cities will do the trick with their snow-sure colder season.
The timing is everything, though, so it’s a good thing we’ve done the hard work for you and put together a list of when to go where for the best chances of seeing a snow-capped city.*
Innsbruck, Austria
Snowy days? Almost guaranteed! Nestled in the Alps, Innsbruck gets hit with regular, heavy snowfalls from December to March. Whether you're skiing or sipping hot choccy while gazing at the peaks, this is every snow-lover's dream!
Tallinn, Estonia
This Baltic beauty doesn’t mess around – it’s the snowiest city in Europe, after all. Come wintertime, Tallinn transforms into a frosty wonderland you won’t want to miss. Speaking of which, the temperatures often drop below zero – bring thermals and sturdy boots for the cobblestones!
Salzburg, Austria
Mozart's hometown knows how to snow in style. From early December to February, Salzburg often gets blanketed in a magical layer of snow. It's not too heavy but more than enough for snowball fights in the Mirabell Gardens. And the snow-sure-until-April Alps are right on your doorstep here too.
Prague, Czech Republic
Prague is a straight-out-of-fairytale city any time of the year, but it comes to its full potential when snowflakes start falling. It’s more of a dusting than a snowstorm, but that’s very much part of its beauty – the City of a Hundred Spires looks enchanting under a white layer.
Turin, Italy
While Turin itself rarely puts on its icy coat, the on-your-doorstep mountains are covered in snow all winter long. Head out for a day of skiing, après or simply snapping pictures of the white peaks! When you’re back in town, there are plenty of museums and culture to keep you occupied.
Iceland
It will come as no shock to anyone that you can find your winter wonderland in Iceland – and pair it with some serious bucket-list-ticking activities too. Plus, you can plan your trip any time from October to March, not just over the winter months!
Krakow, Poland
Another frosty stunner, Krakow, often hides under a blanket of snow come January. Expect flurries of snow, creating a romantic atmosphere for wandering around Old Town or enjoying pierogi in a cosy pub.
Geneva, Switzerland
When the new year rolls around, Geneva blesses its visitors with some white sprinkles, although they aren’t always guaranteed. If the city’s being shy, you’ll find the reliably white Alps nearby!
