Garda

The lake’s namesake village is primed for a peaceful retreat. Although its biggest draw is the panoramas, there’s so much more to see and do. The promenade calls for leisurely mornings people watching. You could also hire a bike and whizz across to neighbouring Bardolino. Active type? Clock up the kilometres with a hike up to Rocca di Garda. Afterwards, there’s no better way to cool down than with a refreshing dip in the lake.

Sirmione

People have been flocking to Sirmione’s natural springs since Roman times and its sparkle shows no signs of dulling. Head to Grotte di Catullo, which dates back to the 1st century, and delve deeper into the lake’s rich history. Once you’ve got your culture fix, flit between aperitivo bars and shops or admire the medieval castle. Who’s for a pamper day at the thermal spa?

Peschiera

This pretty plot is made for walkers and cyclists, so be sure to pack your trainers. The 40km-long Mincio Cycleway is one of the most well-known trails, connecting Peschiera to Mantova. You’ll also want to tick off the UNESCO-listed fortress, which is surrounded by waterways and canals. Its location is a winner too, putting you in prime position for exploring cities like Milan, Venice and Verona by train.

Nestled on the eastern side of the lake, Bardolino’s full of hidden treasures. Follow the cobbled alleyways to the the historic centre, where gelaterias call for an ice cream stop. This is also one of the top spots to try the region’s wines and other local specialties like olive oil. Many shops offer tastings and there’s an informative wine museum. If you fancy a change of scenery, hit the promenade. From here, you can stroll south towards Lazise or north in the direction of Garda and Punta San Vigilio.

Riva

Adventure is Riva’s middle name. The almost constant breeze means it’s a standout for windsurfers and kiteboarders. The Ponale trail is also well worth doing, winding through tunnels to the Cascata del Verona – a duo of waterfalls. Prefer to sightsee from the saddle? Hire an e-bike and check out nearby Lake Ledro. For more laidback days, Spiaggia Sabbioni and Pini Beach are just the ticket. And if getting that ideal holiday snap is part of your holiday non-negotiables, hop on the funicular up to the Bastion Tower.
