Whether you’re carving down pristine pistes, sipping vin chaud fireside with friends or boogieing in your boots at après-ski, Val d’Isère has a special kind of mountain magic. And with handy Jet2.com ski flights to Chambery Airport, as well as the option to add 22kg baggage and ski carriage*, you could be whizzing down the slopes in no time. Have we peaked your interest? Here’s everything you need to know about this French fave...
The resort
Val d’Isère sits in the heart of the Tarentaise Valley, part of France’s famed Savoie region. It’s easily accessible from the airports of Chambery, Geneva and Lyon – which are all Jet2.com gateways! Together with neighbouring Tignes, it forms the Tignes-Val d'Isère ski area. Formerly called Espace Killy, after French Olympic champion Jean-Claude Killy, it offers an incredible 300km of skiable terrain. The village itself is known for its high-end hotels, and you’ll never be short of places to wine and dine. Take your pick of restaurants serving up all the usual Savoyard specialities, like tartiflette or raclette. You could even treat yourself to a Michelin-starred meal at La Table de l’Ours. Travelling with tots? Val d’Isère lays on the lot for families, with dedicated beginner zones, fantastic ski schools and plenty of off-slope activities.
The slopes
You’ll be spoilt for choice when it comes to runs, and the resort’s lofty elevation ensures excellent snow coverage all season long. For first-timers, the Solaise area’s gentle runs and modern lifts are just the ticket. More of an intermediate? The network of long reds is more than enough to keep you busy for a week. The La Daille and Bellevarde sectors are must-ski spots, with wide pistes that lead you back into the village. The pros will be in their element too! The legendary Face de Bellevarde, an Olympic downhill run, will test even the most confident, while off-piste enthusiasts can explore endless bowls and couloirs with a local guide. Freestylers should head to the Val Park for kickers, rails and even a dedicated boardercross run.
The après
Val d’Isère’s après-ski scene is well known and for good reason. A trip here wouldn’t be complete without a stop at La Folie Douce, perched high above the village. As the afternoon sun hits the terrace, DJs, dancers and saxophonists get the crowd going. Off the mountain, the party continues at Cocorico, a fantastic place for live music and a post-skiing pint (or two). If relaxation is on the radar, unwind at one of the luxury spas. Many hotels boast wellness areas with saunas, steam rooms and outdoor whirlpools. There’s also the Aqua Leisure Complex at the Centre Aquasportif, where you can go for a swim or even book a yoga class. More of a thrill-seeker? Dog-sledding, snowmobiling and ice skating are all on the cards.
