Ultimate guide to the Amalfi Coast and Cilento

Ready and raring to take on one of Italy’s most illustrious spots? It's time you got to know the Amalfi Coast and Cilento...

It doesn’t get much more iconic than the astonishing area of the Amalfi Coast and Cilento – and it’s brand-new to Jet2 for 2025! That means you can soar beyond stunning Sorrento to unlock new sights, bites and delights, all in some of the chicest resorts around. Sounds great, right? Follow these handy hints in our ultimate guide to the region and the itinerary will virtually write itself.

Where to stay

We have a growing choice of resorts you can stay in across the Amalfi Coast and Cilento region, but here are three holidaymaker faves to consider...

Positano

Ooh, it’s a bit swish in Positano. Famed for being the image of the Amalfi Coast everyone knows from glossy guidebooks and social media, the tiered town is a colourful architectural patchwork unlike others. The hues of the houses match those of the lemons hollowed out and filled with zesty gelato – the ideal sightseeing pick-me-up. And you’ll be greeted with souvenir stores and restaurants in their rainbow tones – where to go first? But if it’s the brilliant blues of the seaside that lure you in, be sure to sprawl out on Spiaggia Grande. Don’t miss the bewitching greens of the Emerald Grotto either, then snap pics of the dazzling Church of Santa Maria Assunta.

Ravello

Hello, Ravello! Another multi-levelled town boasting staggering, wrap-around views, it’s a place to consider if you want to experience the Amalfi Coast with less of the hustle and bustle. Its centrepiece medieval estate is among the key sights to check out, plus there’s a stretch of shorefront to flop down on. As for the auditorium, it doesn’t get much more impressive, as there are concerts held there throughout the calendar. The icing on top? It’s got to be the annual Ravello Festival, which lays on classical and jazz showcases set to a blissful backdrop. Talk about la dolce vita...

Amalfi

Traditional Amalfi – the namesake resort of this remarkable region – is nothing short of fascinating. Its charm knows no bounds, which you’ll soon identify as you wander around the sepia-splashed streets, and the wining and dining scene is low-key and authentic. You may want to switch off amid the peace of this top-pick postcode, though you can travel up and down the coastline to pitch up on the many beaches. Wall-to-wall postcard scenery awaits.

What to see and do

Botanics dating back to the 14th century are all yours at the Gardens of Minerva. The terraces house water features and teeny tables to sit at after perusing the medicinal plants that pepper the site. And if you’re enjoying all the strolling, how about turning your attention afterwards to Lungomare Trieste? This pretty promenade is lined with swaying palm trees, fountains to admire and benches to rest on.

History hunters can get their culture fix at the dominating Salerno Cathedral, built in 1084. It’s a Romanesque masterpiece fitted with a huge bronze door that’s bound to catch your eye. For even more local history, there’s plenty documented at the Provincial Archaeological Museum. Bulging with artefacts from bygone times, it really paints a picture of who’s left their mark on this part of Italy.

Donning your walking boots is a must if you’re into your hiking. The Sentiero degli Dei footpath is a well-trodden route that starts past Positano and runs along the Lattari Mountains. It’s more for pros than beginners, and the vast views make the best reward! Prefer four wheels to two feet? Few things are more highly recommended in this region than driving along the Amalfi Coast. Various tours will be available to book, if you’d rather soak up your surroundings as a passenger, but hiring a car will be an option too. Consider the Italian dream a reality!

You can bet this place has bragging rights to beautiful boat trips. With oodles of ports, you can set sail on nautical adventures to different towns along the coast, or even over to isles and grottoes. One of our faves has to be Capri, a famous island off the Gulf of Naples. It’s an A-lister's paradise, where ultra-trendy boutiques mingle with upmarket restaurants, and you can embrace the rugged nature of it from the funicular. You'd struggle to sip an espresso in a more luxurious locale...

Veering closer to Sorrento and Naples on your Amalfi Coast and Cilento holiday? Put Pompeii towards the top of your list. The UNESCO-stamped site sits at the base of Mount Vesuvius and serves as a real-life reminder of how the city was destroyed by an eruption. It was left covered in a blanket of volcanic ash but, today, preserved remains are there to wander around. You’ll get to see various remnants of villas, sculptures and roads, while flowers and greenery now flourish. Pink Floyd even recorded and filmed at the Roman amphitheatre within the grounds back in 1972! You can read more about that during your visit.

What to eat and drink

So, you’re thinking Italy means pizza and pasta, right? Well, this is still true – Naples is the birthplace of pizza, after all – but the Amalfi Coast is synonymous with fish and seafood. Net-fresh catches of the day include cod, sea bass and lobster, yet mussels, clams and prawns tend to be the must-chew champions in bowls of local linguine. We’d try the lot! Salty capers and juicy olives stud a lot of the dishes, and lemons find their way to most menus as well – not just in the desserts.

As for supping up, wine is big business with a meal, and limoncello is the digestif of choice for a post-food tipple. But the humble Amalfi spritz is a fun twist on the version made with Aperol, using citrus liqueur as the base instead. Cin cin!
