So, you’ve booked or you’re thinking about booking Leros, the hidden gem of the Dodecanese, and now you need to know all there is to know? Well then, here we are to give you the lowdown! Whether you're a history buff, beach-lover, foodie or someone simply seeking tranquillity, this island has something for everyone.
Let’s go to the beach
On Leros’ beaches, you can expect glistening Aegean waves and plenty of scenic views. Most of the island’s shorefronts are pebbled, but sandy spots can be found too. Now, let’s see…
Alinda Beach
Here, you can listen to the pine trees swaying gently in the sea breeze while admiring the mountainous landscape. This patch is stunning, catering for all holidaymakers, but especially for families. With its facilities, water sports and crystal-clear waves, everyone’s bound to be won over by Alina Beach.
Agia Marina Beach
Agia Marina Beach has been awarded Blue Flag Status, so a clean, sandy stretch and pristine waters come as standard. There are sunloungers, parasols and pedaloes for hire too, so convenience and fun are at the forefront of your beach day. Shallow waters are a bonus for the little ones!
Vromolithos Beach
This beautiful cove is hard to resist. It’s seen more tourists in recent years but remains one of Leros’ most charming coastal points. Parasols and sunloungers can also be reserved and, if you have a preference, sand sits on either end of the beach while pebbles make up the rest. When you start getting peckish, there are oodles of tavernas around waiting to fill you up with Greek cuisine.
Adventure calls
Although they’re dreamy, there’s much more to Leros than its beaches. There are plenty of opportunities to get active, snap some pictures and create unforgettable memories. What are they, you ask? Your wish is our command...
Church of Agios Isidoros
Firstly, this quaint church is built on a mini-island in the middle of the sea. There’s a small path leading up to it, so you’ll want to visit when the waves are calm. It’s a memorable experience and a great opportunity for some pictures!
Panteli Castle and Leros Windmills
If you’re partial to a bit of hiking, make sure to pack your comfy shoes for this trip, as Panteli Castle is a must. The views from this historical site are incredible. On the way, you can catch sight of the old windmills, renowned for their cylindrical shape and cone roofs. These restored windmills now generate electricity from the wind where they once ground crops. Impressive, right?
Visit a vineyard
Why not visit a winery? There’s Hatzidakis Winery which provides an interactive tour across the rolling verdant hills. You can hand-pick grapes with local experts and even have a bite to eat with a meze platter. The vistas are breathtaking. Sounds like a day well spent to us…
Charting a course for fun
Thought about doing some island-hopping? You can visit Archangelos, an islet just beyond Partheni Bay, home to wild goats and exquisite cuisine. Or, what about the popular Kalymnos or Kos? If you fancy a change of scenery or a taste of bustling nightlife, get your sea legs on. Boats set sail from the main port Lakki or Agia Marina, depending on which island you have your eye on.
Nightlife
Leros is a more peaceful isle in comparison to its slightly noisier neighbours, but the music is a little louder in Alinda. There are also vibrant café-bars and nightclubs in Agia Marina and Lakki. For the most part, relaxing tavernas around the island are great for a scrumptious dinner and a refreshing tipple.
