Just a short ferry ride from the capital, Aegina’s long been a weekend wonder for Athenians. Now, this hidden gem is getting its moment in the spotlight. And rightly so! From ancient temples to traditional villages, it’s got all the trappings of a gorgeous Greek getaway. Here’s everything you need to know...
Where to stay
You’ve got a handful of options when it comes to resorts, each offering something a little different. The island’s hub, Aegina Town, is a top pick. Here, days are spent strolling along the waterfront, dipping in and out of cute cafés and browsing boutiques. On the eastern coast, Aghia Marina beckons with its golden sands and traditional tavernas. It’s all about the sea views in Perdika too, so get ready to fill your camera roll and top up your tan.
What to see
Culture vultures, prepare to be in your element! You’ll be blown away by the Temple of Aphaia, which dates back to around 500 BC. Sitting atop a hill, the views are worth the trip alone. Marvel at the well-preserved ruins and learn about the temple’s history. You can delve deeper into the island’s past at the Archaeological Museum of Aegina, which is full of remarkable relics. You’ll want to add Paleochora Ghost Village to your agenda too. What was once the medieval capital is now a fascinating time capsule. En route, you’ll spot Aegina Agios Nektarios Monastery, so why not tick off two must-sees in one day?
What to do
Does anything beat a beach day? We think not! Pack your sun cream and make a beeline for popular patches like Marathon Beach. It’s fab for families, thanks to the calm waters and nearby amenities. Souvala Beach is another sandy superstar. Soak up the rays, then let the scent of sizzling seafood lure you to the waterfront restaurants. You could also take a trip to Moni Island, just twenty minutes away on the ferry. Instead of people, you’ll find peacocks and deer grazing peacefully here. There’s a beach to sprawl out on, as well as walking trails for the active types.
What to eat
Foodies, you’re in for a real treat! Not only will you get to feast on all the usual Greek goodies like moussaka, souvlaki and gyros, but Aegina’s also known for its pistachios. These tasty nuts can be found in all sorts of recipes, from pistachio ice cream to pastries and spreads. You’ll spot them in most of the local shops and markets, so grab a bag or two to take home as a snack-worthy souvenir. When it comes to choosing what to order in a restaurant, we are big fans of a meze platter, as you can sample lots of different flavours.
