Portuguese architecture, rugged greenery, sweeping beaches – oh, you name it, the Costa Verde has it. Very much a beach destination, it’s primed for those all-important days where you can kick back and embrace holiday mode. And we have so many resorts throwing open the doors to villas you can stay in too. But when it comes to the itinerary, fitting in all the history, culture and gastronomy is a doddle, so pens at the ready...

The beaches
Vast, golden sands are big business round these parts. Praia de Caminha is one of the most popular picks, where sunbathers recline in the rays and windsurfers hit the waves. The glittering Atlantic views will lure you in just past the Minho River. Praia de Esposende has a similar draw, though it’s right up there for surfing instead. If you’re thinking of flaking out in the balmy temperatures in the morning with lunch somewhere easy afterwards, you’ll find a smattering of eateries tucked behind Afife Beach. Choose a fave or, if you’re on a Jet2Villa holiday, make the most of having your car hire included by hitting the open road and ticking off the lot.

The history and culture
Want to go somewhere you can Braga ‘bout when you get home? The charming city of Braga is a picturesque plot, where religious buildings are woven into the fabric of the place – and the Bom Jesus do Monte sanctuary is the focal point. Souvenir shops and museums add to its roll call of allure too. But if a large-city vibe is what you’re after, colour-clad Porto is a match. Bedecked with cool cafés serving the humble custard tart, pastel de nata, alongside Portuguese restaurants and wine bars, it’s a foodie’s paradise. Meanwhile, bookworms can get lost within the pages of Lello Bookstore before a waltz around a trendy art gallery.
Keep things lower key during your Costa Verde getaway by exploring individual sites rich in heritage instead. We’re talking the Fort of Insua ruins, Peneda Geres National Park, Ponte Medieval and the Santuario de Santa Luzia. The lush greenery of the blossoming International Garden Festival of Ponte de Lima isn’t to be missed either.

The wining and dining
Let’s not forget that the Douro Valley will be your oyster here, and you know what that means... Wine, wine and more wine. The undulating, verdant hills are home to some of the finest vineyards around, where you can sample local reds and whites in the prettiest, leafiest surroundings. Check out the experiences you can book there.
Fresh fish dishes are among the menu mainstays in the Costa Verde, thanks to the coastal location. The best hauls bring in juicy cod and sumptuous octopus, among others. Contemporary Mediterranean fare might also tempt your taste buds. Feeling adventurous? Wear something with a loose waistband and try a francesinha. This sandwich is a hearty choice, layered with meat, covered in melted cheese and smothered in a rich beer sauce.
