Top things to do in Parga

Planning a Greek getaway to picturesque Parga? Our rundown of the top things to do will certainly come in handy.

Pretty Parga sits on Greece’s western edge, just a little further south than the island of Corfu – which is easy to reach for day trips! If it’s traditional Greek culture and the laid-back way of life you want to experience, Parga will be perfect for you.

The village itself is relatively small in size but the winding streets and picturesque spots that it boasts certainly make up for it. From its stunning harbour to the handful of serene beaches, Parga is not to be missed.

Keen to explore? Here are the top things to do in Parga:

1. Acheron River

Just a short drive from the village’s centre will bring you to this natural beauty. The crystal-clear waters of the Acheron River stretch for more than 52km! You can stroll along the river’s bank, taking in the wonderful flora and fauna or if you’re feeling the heat, why not take a dip to cool off?

Some of the locals ride through these waters on horseback, so if you’re feeling adventurous, you could even give that a go! Pack up a picnic and spend the whole day here or grab refreshments from the riverside restaurant.

2. Venetian Castle of Parga

Sucker for sea views? This high-up vantage point will no doubt be your favourite, but be warned, you’ll have to conquer the steep walk up through the Old Town first.

The crumbling ruins have been destroyed and rebuilt throughout the centuries, but the main structure still stands and offers a fascinating window into the village’s past. Capture unique snaps from the top which overlooks the village and the picturesque island of Panagia.

3. Valtos Beach

Bright-white pebble shore? Tick. Glistening turquoise waters? Tick. Verdant pine forest backing the beach? Tick! Valtos Beach is what dreams are made of. There are loads of loungers to choose from or if you’d prefer to lay down your towel, there’s plenty of free space too. A handful of beach bars and restaurants are just steps away, so lunchtimes couldn’t be easier.

You can drive here from the centre in just a few minutes or if you fancy getting that heartrate up, the steps and steep hills from the Old Town are your best bet.

Stroll to the very end and you’ll discover a tiny whitewashed church that’s still in use today. Modest dress must be worn if you want to enter but it’s certainly worth a peep inside.

4. Parga harbour

The highlight of Parga has got to be the harbour. The buildings here come in all colours of the rainbow and they’re built up into the hillsides, oozing a classic Italianate vibe.

The stone jetty is where you can catch boat trips to nearby towns or watch fishermen sail in and out with their daily catch. Take your pick from the bars and restaurants that line the promenade then simply sit back, relax and take it all in.

At night, the place is lit-up with twinkling lights. Take a seat on a restaurant’s balcony and watch the pinky-purple sunset, before sipping cocktails along the waterfront. Bars are open until late, so whatever you’re in the mood for, whether it’s chilled-out chats or live music, everyone’s catered for here.

5. Panagia Chapel

Just across from the harbour, you’ll find an idyllic islet that’s home to this teeny whitewashed chapel. The name translates as Virgin Mary, and if you’re lucky enough to visit when a service is taking place, you can have a look inside!

If you’re a confident swimmer, you’ll get across to the island with no problems, but if you’d prefer to stay dry, hire a boat or join a tour that’s heading over there. Don’t forget to wear sensible water shoes, as the edge of the island can be particularly rocky.

6. Kryoneri Beach

This is Parga’s main beach, so if you’re not down early enough, you might struggle to find a sunbathing spot. The white pebbled shore is framed by tree-covered rock formations which makes it a magical setting. If you’ve got little explorers in tow, watch out for rocks that emerge from the water.

Shops, bars and cafés are just a short stroll away, so when you’re looking for that refreshing drink or ice cream, you won’t have to stray too far from your lounger.

7. The Green Bakery

Seeking a little morning pick-me-up? The Green Bakery is just that. It’s a few minutes’ walk from the harbour and will no doubt become your favourite breakfast stop while on holiday here.

You can enjoy its menu on the go or take a seat in the vine-covered restaurant garden and tuck into a huge selection of brunch dishes. We’re talking everything from pancake stacks drizzled with syrup to fresh pastries filled with jam or custard. Yum!

The best part? It’s open until midnight nearly every night, so if you’ve got a hankering for a huge slab of portokalopita, AKA juicy Greek orange sponge cake, then this is the place to be!

8. Paragaea Olive Oil Factory

Delve into Parga’s rich olive oil producing history at fascinating Paragaea. Learn about the olive oil making process that they followed back in the day, then enjoy a step-by-step video about modern-day production. Finally, the best bit. You’ll head up to the kitchen for a tasting session, learning about the different varieties of oils and tapenades and seeing which you like the best.

If you want to find out even more about the local olives, why not book one of the private cookery classes or tasting sessions? Wine fans will also be in their element, as the factory runs a wine tasting experience which showcases the crisp Greek varieties.
