Top things to do in Lagos

Discover the top things to do in Lagos, the seaside town on the western edge of the sunbaked Algarve…

Lagos is as pretty as a picture. This quaint Portuguese town, tucked along the west side of the sun-drenched Algarve region, defies all expectations. Here visions of the Brit-style resorts the area is known for melt away and are replaced by those of cobbled streets, vintage doors and cosy family-run restaurants.

Enveloped by 16th-century walls, the historic old town is Lagos’ epicentre, filled with cute boutiques and ambient eateries, but there’s a beautiful set of beaches on its doorstep, too. This cocktail of old, natural and new creates an intoxicating place to visit in Portugal.

Here’s our guide to the top things to do in Lagos.

1. Old Town

Arrive in the city and wander down the palm-lined marina in the direction of the old town. The maze of tiled narrow streets is a photographer’s heaven, lined by colourful houses clad in patterned tiles and vibrant doors. Look out for knockers crafted into brass hands, a cute little quirk of the area!

The old town’s charming streets are also brimming with kitsch shops where you can pick up painted tiles, bright fabrics and local wines to take home as souvenirs. Live musicians perform in the streets, providing a lively guitar soundtrack to your stroll. Hungry? No problem, as there are plenty of places to pitch up and plop down for a lazy lunch. Peri-peri chicken and freshly-netted seafood are among the local favourites.

2. Ponta da Piedade

While Ponta da Piedade is not strictly in Lagos itself, it’s only less than two miles down the road. And boy, is it worth venturing to. From the old town, a string of beaches, surrounded by rugged cliffs, line the coast all the way to Ponta da Piedade.

This group of natural rock formations is a set of stunners. A series of boardwalks meander through this area of natural beauty, with viewpoints designed to give you the best glimpse of the dramatic coastline. Follow these winding pathways among fragrant foliage and admire the almighty Atlantic waves crashing into the ochre rocks below.

While you can wander for a while, make sure you head to the lighthouse. It’s closed to the public but if you follow a path down its left-hand side, it’ll take you to the most extraordinary part of Ponta da Piedade. Steps zigzag down the cliffside, presenting new perspectives along the way. At the bottom, waves lap at the rocks and hidden caves and coves create an air of mystery. Not only is this one of the best things to do in Lagos, but in the entire Algarve – don’t skip it!

3. Marina de Lagos

A stroll along Lagos’ marina presents the perfect opportunity to breathe in that salty sea air and feel the sun on your skin. Meander slowly past yachts bobbing in the water and follow the castle ruins as they curve around the seafront. Castelo dos Governadores dates back to the Medieval Age and its remaining battlements are a beautiful example of Moorish architecture.

While you’re here, cross the road to check out Fortaleza da Ponta da Bandeira. This 17th-century stronghold has been restored to its former glory and comes complete with a drawbridge and sea views.

4. Igreja de Santo António

Strike gold at Igreja de Santo António. This whitewashed church doesn’t look like much from the outside (though the two bell towers sure are pretty) but head inside to find the real treasure. Here you’ll be greeted by an interior clad in baroque wood carvings painted in gold and an array of azulejo tiles – the result is rather stunning.

Igreja de Santo António is in its second form, having been rebuilt after an earthquake in the 18th century. Its interior is so lavish, it’s now one of the country’s National Monuments.

5. Lagos Market

Stop by Lagos Market and send your senses into overdrive. The sights, the sounds, the smells… you’re in for a real treat here.

There are no tacky souvenirs on display, rather stalls piled high with seasonal produce, traders peddling their wares and locals haggling over prices. Amble past freshly-caught fish, heaps of plump fruit, huge lumps of cheese and slices of cured meat, set across two floors.

6. Praia Meia

The golden sands of Praia Meia stretch into the distance for 4km, providing ample room for you to lay out in the sunshine. Laze with a book on the wide shoreline or try your hand at the water sports available among the Atlantic. Windsurfing, kite surfing or jet skiing, which will you choose?

For something less high-octane, slip off your shoes and take a stroll along the water’s edge. Beach bars and cafes are dotted along the length of Praia Meia, perfect for a mid-afternoon ice cream stop.

7. Praia Dona Ana

Venture out of Lagos’ centre to discover stunning Praia Dona Ana. When you arrive at the clifftop, gaze out to the gleaming honey-hued sands below and admire the dramatic tangerine-tinged cliffs surrounding them. To add even more beauty to this scene, the azure Atlantic laps at the shore.

Make your way down the wooden staircase onto the beach and enjoy the feel of the soft sands between your toes. The high cliffs provide shelter from the breeze, creating a peaceful place to spend an afternoon soaking up the rays.
