Visit the National Marine Park
You can’t visit the island without discovering the National Marine Park, which was the first in Greece, and currently holds the title as the largest marine protected area in Europe. Swimming, sightseeing, walking — it's all possible here. It’s also rich in marine life and is home to the endangered Mediterranean monk seal. Why not take a boat trip through the pristine waters and see if you can catch a glimpse of one of these shy sea dogs?
Leftos Gialos Beach
Picture this. You're tucking into freshly caught, lemon-drizzled fish, watching the glittering waters lap on the shore. Sounds dreamy, right? Well, that’s what you could be doing when you head to Leftos Gialos Beach. After your Greek feast, make sure you mosey on down to the waterfront for a quick dip – it's a true slice of paradise.
Go diving
Get ready to take the plunge and uncover the island’s natural beauty as you embark on a diving adventure. There are four main diving schools on the island who’ll show you the ropes and take you to see caves, coves and Crayola-coloured fish.
Head east from the old town and you’ll find this perfectly pebbly gem. With its crystal-clear waters and mountainous greenery, it’s ideal for those seeking a go-slow day by the sea. And when you get peckish, there are two tavernas on standby ready to serve you all manner of Greek goodies.
Agios Dimitrios Beach
Hailed as one of the best beaches in Alonissos, Agios Dimitrios is not to be missed. It’s a horseshoe-shaped spot with some of the clearest waters you can find, making it ideal for snorkelling and swimming. And don’t forget your beach shoes – it’s a pebbly plot.
Explore the town of Hora
Why not take a break from the beach to spend the day in Alonissos’s old capital, Hora? Expect sweeping vistas thanks to the town’s hilltop location, along with a maze of narrow alleyways and time-worn buildings. Step into one of the traditional tavernas and sample gorgeous Greek flavours that are sure to leave a lasting impression, or head straight to the heart of the town – the square. It can be reached by bus or by a scenic path from Patitiri.
Agios Petros Beach
Bordered by lush-green pine trees and olive groves, Agios Petros Beach is a firm favourite with beach bums. It’s tucked away on the western coast, so you can bank on getting plenty of peace and quiet. And with the shops and restaurants in the dinky village of Steni Vala just a short 15-minute walk away, you’re never too far if you get hungry or thirsty.
Uncover history at Alonissos Museum
The island’s history is brought to life through sculptures, paintings and costumes here. Plus, downstairs, you’ll find a recreated farmhouse, which showcases traditional jobs on the island like wine makers, carpenters and blacksmiths. If you’re an art fan, you might want to try and catch one of the museum's many seasonal exhibitions.
Votsi Beach
This small, shingly spot in the town of Votsi only has room for a few sun-seekers, so make sure you lay your towel down early. Fancy a bite to eat? No problem. If you can lure yourself away from the shore, there are plenty of restaurants in the town. Venture a little further and you’ll find a charming harbour with cute boats bobbing on the aquamarine water.
