Throwing the party of a lifetime is one of the top duties for any best man or bridesmaid. The number one goal is making sure the guest of honour has the time of their life – and it all starts with the perfect destination.
Luckily, there are loads of great places to go overseas for a truly unforgettable trip, whether the future bride or groom wants to see the sights, take in the culture or simply let their hair down.
Here’s our pick of the top hen and stag do destinations in Europe you should consider for a memorable weekend of fun.
Barcelona
Best for: Party people
Sun, sea, sand and sangria – Barcelona has it all. La Rambla is where hedonistic party people can go to eat, drink and be merry, with a ton of great tapas restaurants and bars to crawl between. Finish off an unforgettable night at the Opium nightclub, which will keep you up to the small hours with pumping electronic music and an outdoor terrace overlooking the Barceloneta Beach.
Nurse your head the next day with a trip to that very beach, one of the most popular seaside spots in the city – and rightly so. Its golden sands and clear-blue waters attract surfers, sun-worshippers and siesta-seekers. When you’re ready to hit the town once again, there are also loads of beach bars to choose from, as well as rooftop bars where you can watch the sun go down.
Football mad stags and hens will also want to check out Camp Nou. Even if there’s not a game on, the museum is well worth a visit and the tour will give you an insight into how some of the world’s best players spend their days.
Budapest
Best for: Trendsetters
Budapest is right up there as one of the continent’s best stag and hen destinations. Locals have been turning abandoned buildings into trendy nightspots, known as ruin pubs, where trendsetters go to raise a few glasses of Hungarian beer in laid-back surroundings. Many are found in the central district, so keep an eye out for Szimpla Kert, Otkert and Doboz.
There’s no shortage of places to go for a big night out either. Morrison’s 2 is one of the most popular nightclubs in the city, playing everything from R&B and hip-hop to reggae and house on six floors. For something a bit different, choose from one of the clubs on Obudai Island right in the middle of the Danube.
Soothe your head the next day with a trip to a traditional bath house, where you can treat yourself to a massage followed by a soak in a thermal pool.
Prague
Best for: Beer lovers
The buzzing city of Prague is known for having some of the best and cheapest beer in Europe. Be sure to spend a night in a traditional beer hall such as the 550-year-old U Medvidku, which makes what it claims is the strongest beer in the world at 11.8%.
You can also sign up to tours that’ll take you to some of the city’s best microbreweries. At each stop, an expert will tell you a little about how each bevvy is made before you start sipping. And you wouldn’t want to leave without trying famous brands such as Pilsner Urquell, Budvar and Staropramen in their home country.
Culture-vultures can also book a group cruise on the Vltava River and sail past some of the city’s best-known sights – the perfect way to relax after a big night out.
Ibiza
Best for: All-night ravers
From banging clubs to stunning beaches, Ibiza has all the right ingredients for a stag or hen do. Let your mate have one last taste of being young, free and single at Pacha, which has been known to put on acrobatics displays with daredevils swinging from giant stars dangling from the ceiling. There’s also glamourous O Beach, where you can lie back on giant poolside beds while blissful beats blast out.
The sun-kissed island offers plenty of opportunities to chill out, too. In the gorgeous Old Town, you can walk the city walls all the way up to the cathedral, stopping by galleries and boutique shops on the way. You can also take your pick from some beautiful beaches, whether you want to keep the party going or work on your tan in the peace and quiet. Las Salinas is where you’ll find beats and beach bars, while laid-back Ports des Torrent is a 30-minute water taxi from the San Antonio district.
Benidorm
Best for: Good times guaranteed
Sticking with the Spanish theme, Benidorm is the place to head to be guaranteed a good time. When it comes to clubs, pubs and bars, you’re spoilt for choice in this resort. Beach Club Penelope is pretty much a nightlife institution, while Ku is a banging hotspot with a Buddhist twist. For something a little more exclusive, Secret Garden Roof Bar Garden styles itself as "Benidorm's best-kept secret” and offers a dizzying array of cocktails in the sun.
Aside from the almost endless parties, there are also plenty of opportunities to soak up the sun, whether it’s at the bustling Levante or more chilled-out Malpas. In the more authentically Spanish Old Town, you’ll find more tapas restaurants than you’ll know what to do with and culture in the form of the church of San Jaime. If you fancy a bit of a trip out, there’s no shortage of waterparks, with Aqualandia always a favourite.
