Beaches? Boutiques? Bars? The Athens Coast is the perfect yin to the vibrant yang of the Greek capital. Known as a high-end hotspot for the rich and famous since the 1960s, this dazzling destination is now firmly on the radar for relaxing retreats. Wondering what there is to see and do? Well, we thought you’d never ask…

1. Hit the beach
It’s easy to escape the hustle and bustle of the city, with a stellar selection of golden beaches inviting you to sprawl in the sunshine. Many boast the Blue Flag, so you can expect pristine sands and handy amenities. Privately-operated Astir Beach brings the glitz, while Sounio Beach delivers the views.

2. Unwind at Lake Vouliagmeni
Take some time to switch off and reconnect with nature at Lake Vouliagmeni. Got any aches and pains? The waters are believed to be therapeutic, boasting minerals thought to heal various conditions such as rheumatism and arthritis. It’s easy to while away a whole day here, with sunloungers for reclining and a café for dining.

3. Go shopping in Glyfada
This upmarket resort is just the ticket if you’re looking for somewhere to get your retail fix. High-street shops and designer brands can be found on Gounari Street, Zisimopoulou Street and Lazaraki Street. Afterwards, find a café down Laodikis Street and treat yourself to a well-deserved snack break. Thursday is market day, so head down for fresh produce and local trinkets.

4. Tick off the Temple of Poseidon
Pop on your history hat, this temple dates all the way back to 444 BC! Perched on the southernmost tip of Cape Sounio, it was built to honour the God of the Sea. This special spot is at its most magical come sunset when the marble glows in orange hues.

5. Check out a floating museum
Docked at Flisvos Marina, the Battleship Averof now serves as a fascinating museum. Get to know a little more about Greek naval history as you explore this ship, which played an important role in the Balkan Wars.

6. Try some water sports
Be sure to pack your flippers, the crystal-clear waters are tailor-made for snorkelling and scuba diving trips! Dive underwater and discover the colourful array of marine life. There are a few shipwrecks around these parts too. You could also try canoeing, stand-up paddleboarding or kayaking.

7. Get active at Sounio National Park
One of the best ways to explore Sounio National Park is by foot. Look out for the local flora and fauna that thrives here, including herons, falcons and so much more. You’ll want to bring your camera too, as the sea views are nothing short of spectacular!

8. Discover local artists at The Blender Gallery
Bit of a culture vulture? Make a beeline for this contemporary art gallery in Glyfada. Founded in 2012, it’s a trendy space full of exhibits and permanent displays from both Greek and international artists. They hold regular events and talks, so check what’s on while you’re here.

9. Explore Piraeus
Not only is Piraeus home to the largest passenger port in the Mediterranean, but there are also museums to visit, fine-dining restaurants to try and lots of luxury yachts to admire. If you’re a fan of your fish, book a table at Michelin-starred Varoulko Seaside. Marinated sea bass carpaccio and crab ravioli are just two of the mouthwatering highlights.

10. Visit the Sea Turtle Rescue Centre
Spend a few hours at the only Sea Turtle Rescue Centre in Greece. Meet the volunteers caring for these curious creatures and learn all about their ongoing efforts to protect them. Admission is free or you can take a 45-minute tour of the centre for a 50-euro donation, which covers the cost of 10 days rehabilitation for the turtles.
