The sights, the sounds, the smells… Thessaloniki has it all. Wondering which way to turn first? Here are our top choices to add to your itinerary...

1. Look around the Aristotle Square
Located at the heart of Thessaloniki, Aristotle Square is always bubbling with energy. Whether you’re visiting during the Thessaloniki Film Festival or just looking for a pretty sunset spot, the main city square is a wonderful place to unwind.

2. Stand under the Arch of Galerius
Once a grand, eight-pillar structure, the Arch of Galerius still commands your attention in central Thessaloniki. Although, nowadays, you’ll see only three of the pillars – it’s a miracle that they’ve even survived, especially as the arch has stood there since the 4th century! While you’re there, bob into its neighbour Rotunda too – the Byzantine monument is the oldest surviving church in Greece.
3. Attend a performance at the Concert Hall
For a cultural evening out, head to the Concert Hall to catch a beautiful ballet or serene symphony show. While from the outside it might look all new and modern, the interior of the building welcomes its visitors with a traditional theatre ambience.

4. Explore the Archaeological Museum
As Tripadvisor’s top recommendation for your time in this city, the Archaeological Museum of Thessaloniki is not to be missed. Take a journey through time as you wander through the maze of exhibitions. And make sure to check the museum’s website before going, as you can enjoy free entry on ten specified days every year!

5. Pop into Agios Dimitrios Church
Even if history and religious relics aren’t your thing, a visit to Agios Dimitrios Church is a must when in Thessaloniki. The grand chandeliers cast a warm light on the intricate arches, paintings and mosaics, and the detailed altar is impressive too!

6. Savour the taste of Thessaloniki
The title as the first UNESCO-approved Greek City of Gastronomy alone alludes to there being something special about to Thessaloniki’s gastronomy scene. Bougatsa, bougiourdi, meze, koulouria, soutzoukakia – the list goes on and on. You’ll be on a tasting spree here!

7. Eat your way through the Ladadika district
Now that you’ve heard about Thessaloniki’s culinary magic, are you wondering where to find the good stuff? Cue Ladadika, the area where olive oil flows like a river and ouzo is practically on tap. What once was a district of olive oil factories has now transformed into an artsy and vibrant hotspot, famous for its trendy cafés and traditional tavernas.

8. Climb the White Tower
Once you’re all feta-fuelled, ascend to the most iconic landmark of Thessaloniki – the White Tower. Standing proud like a guardian of the Aegean, the historic defence tower reveals panoramic views at the top, while inside, you’ll find a seven-floor monumental museum. Best part? It’s just around the corner from the Archaeological Museum, so you can tick them both off your bucket list!

9. Retrace history in Ano Poli
Nicknamed ‘the City above the City’, Ano Poli is an ancient neighbourhood of Thessaloniki that’s well worth exploring. As the name suggests, it’s set in the upper part, so the views are picture-perfect there. And the historic houses coloured with vibrant shades line the cobbled streets, leading you to tavernas for an al fresco afternoon.

10. Set out to the beach
Although Thessaloniki is located on the seaside, the beaches are a bit harder to come by. That doesn’t mean there aren’t any though! Just a short drive away from the city centre, an array of sandy stretches can be found. Whether you’re looking to try surfing on Angelochori Beach or swap the hustle and bustle for Paradise Beach, the coast has a lot to offer.
