It’s no secret that Sardinia’s top spots are located on its shores. Think bewitching beaches, crystal-clear waters and rocky crags separating them from teeny towns. But behold Olbia, a coastal gem that’s got a sight or two to offer once you’re done lazing in the rays! Here’s a list of our favourite things to do in awesome Olbia.
Old Town
Although Olbia is quite modernised, its historical legacy hides in plain sight in the Old Town. Stroll the coloured streets, wander around Matteotti and Margherita squares and make sure to visit the charming boutiques, even if you’re not looking to splurge.
Basilica di San Simplicio
It might not look like much from the outside, but inside Basilica di San Simplicio is bound to wow you. This 11th-century church is already impressive having survived hundreds of years, but its stone columns and high arches are a unique sight to witness too!
Chiesa Parrocchiale di S. Paolo Apostolo
If you’ve seen any postcards from Olbia, chances are Chiesa Parrocchiale di S. Paolo Apostolo has been all over them. The funky rooftop of the 18th-century church is hard to miss and it’s become one of the top attractions in this charming city. Once you’ve finished snapping shots of the vibrant colours outside, step indoors to admire the historic part of the building.
Porto Istana Beach
Even if it’s not the beaches that attracted you to sweeping Sardinia, a visit to Porto Istana Beach is as essential as photographing the Eiffel Tower in Paris. Shallow waters, eye-catching sea colour and powder-white sand… how can you resist it?
Nuraghe Riu Mulinu Cabu Abbas
Hikers and history hunters, unite – we’re climbing to an archaeological site! Originally used as a tower to spot old enemies, Nuraghe Riu Mulinu Cabu Abbas echoes the stories of its past as you’re making your way through bush-lined paths. These ancient forts sit up on a hilltop overlooking Olbia, so they’re worth visiting even if just for the views!
Corso Umberto
Every city has its main street and Olbia is no exception. Whether you’re looking for to grab a bite, hit the shelves of a souvenir store or you just fancy an evening walk, Corso Umberto is at your fingertips. It becomes traffic-free after 7pm, so you can wander freely along the avenue that leads to the idyllic harbour.
Archaeological Museum of Olbia
Sitting pretty on a teeny island right next to the shore, this museum will walk its visitors through the history of Olbia. Starting with prehistory and navigating all the way up to the 19th century, the museum is rich in stories and artefacts. Just don’t forget – Italians enjoy a siesta, so the museum will be closed around midday!
Fausto Noce Park
If the sandstone buildings all start looking the same, head towards Fausto Noce Park, a green retreat in the middle of Olbia. Take a leisurely stroll surrounded by the lush greenery, find a quiet spot for a picnic or simply lay back and let the world slow down.
Costa Smeralda
After you’ve done your exploring in Olbia, it’s time to get familiar with its surroundings. First on the agenda – the so-called Emerald Coast. And fear not, it has rightfully earned this name! Costa Smeralda’s beaches are some of the most spectacular sand stretches in Europe, where aquamarine waters are completely see-through, and misshapen rocks hide the secret coves. Worked up an appetite? Follow your nose to Porto Cervo, where chic restaurants plate up Italian delicacies!
Tenute Ólbios
No holiday in Italy is complete without a wine tasting, and Tenute Ólbios is where you’ll want to be in Sardinia.
