Just off the coast of north-west Greece sits Corfu, one of the greenest islands in the Ionian archipelago. It’s blanketed by rolling olive groves and cypress-sprinkled hills that stretch as far as the eye can see.

You’ve got lively resorts lined with tranquil turquoise waters and pearly white sand alongside brilliant bars and restaurants serving up a whole world of cuisine. In between all of this loveliness, you’ll find hidden gems speckled with ancient history and striking landmarks that are guaranteed to wow.

1. Corfu Old Town

Fancy stepping back in time to see what life on Corfu was like hundreds of years ago? A stroll through Corfu’s Old Town will help you do just that. This UNESCO World Heritage site dates back to 8th century BC and its Venetian and Byzantine-style buildings are hard to miss.

The maze of narrow streets hides pretty squares and souvenir shops and traditional tavernas spill out onto the pavements, so why not grab a fresh Greek coffee and watch the world pass by?

2. Mount Pantokrator

If you’re up for a challenge while on holiday, take on Corfu’s highest point. Impressive Mount Pantokrator in the north-east of the island is accessible by car, bike or on foot.

The narrow roads and winding paths can be tough to navigate but with an abundance of wildlife in the area and a strong scent of wild sage, there’s plenty to take your mind off the route. Once you reach the top, grab yourself a drink in the café and soak up the unparalleled views or wander the well-maintained monastery.

Sometimes the summit is shrouded in low-lying cloud, so visibility is quite poor, but if you visit on a clear day, you can see the whole of the island, the neighbouring isles of Paxos and Lefkas as well as Albania across the water!

3. Pontikonisi

Just off Corfu’s east coast, you’ll find the enchanting island of Pontikonisi. Also referred to as Mouse Island due to its shape from above, this serene spot is a great choice if you want to see a lesser-known part of Corfu.

Legend has it that it was once the ship of Odysseus which was transformed by Poseidon into the rock it is today. Want to check it out? Just jump on a boat from Kanoni for only a few euros per person.

4. Porto Timoni Beach

For a Greek beach that’s relatively undiscovered, check out Porto Timoni. You’ll find it on the north-west coast of the island, below Agios Georgios. It’s technically two beaches in one, with bays on either side of a small strip of land that’s surrounded by lush green hills.

As it’s so remote, there aren’t any cafés or bars on the beach, so it’s best to pack a bottle of water and a few snacks to keep you going for the day.

5. Angelokastro

The Byzantine castle of Angelokastro is certainly one of the island’s must-sees. Simply follow the narrow roads from Krini then take the number of steep steps that lead to the top. The castle rises 305 metres above sea level, so as you’d expect, the panoramic views across the Bay of Paleokastritsa are stunning.

6. St Spyridon Church

St Spyridon Church is the most famous church on the island. Its iconic red and white bell tower stands tall above Corfu’s Old Town. It’s a very spiritual place, especially for the locals, so you might see church services taking place when you visit. Inside, you’ll find the relics of Saint Spyridon, a grand marble altar that’s gleaming with gold accents, ornate chandeliers and large votive candles that you can light for a small donation.

7. Museum of Asian Art of Corfu

This impressive collection of Asian art is housed in the Palace of St. Michael & St. George on Corfu’s east coast. The fascinating exhibitions feature everything from prehistoric bronze statues and Chinese ceramics to Indian figures and Japanese prints.

If you fancy doing something a little different while visiting Corfu, this art museum could be the answer. It’s open daily from 8am to 8pm and tickets are €6 each.

8. Aqualand Corfu

Want hours of fun in the sun that’s great for all the family? This huge water oasis stretches across 75,000 square metres at the heart of the island. There’s a dedicated children’s area that’s equipped with shallow-water pools and mini slides alongside a family park where you’ll find a winding lazy river and multi-rider slides. Thrill-seekers should make a beeline for the 12-metre kamikazes and the free fall slides. They’re 24 metres high and give you the feeling of weightlessness!

When it comes to re-fuelling after whizzing down the slides, there’s a great selection of chilled-out bars and restaurants to choose from. Grab a fresh pizza and fries from Fritland or pick up a traditional gyros from the Greek corner to enjoy on your sun lounger.

9. Voutoumi Beach

Fancy escaping to one of Greece’s best-kept secrets? Voutomi Beach is on the tiny island of Antipaxos and boasts glistening azure waters and a bright-white pebbly shore. Hop on a boat trip from Corfu Town or Lefkimmi Port and you’ll be in paradise in no time. Laze on the beach and watch the yachts bob up and down or grab your snorkel and dive into the crystal-clear sea!

10. Rovinia Beach

From one amazing beach to another and this time we’re over on the west coast of the island. You’ll find this hidden-away haven close to Paleokastritsa and Liapades by either jumping on a boat or walking through the vast olive groves. It’s a pretty and peaceful setting where you can unwind and soak up the sunshine but remember to pack drinks and lunch as there’s no café or bar on the beach.
