2. Benedictine Monastery
This unique monastery, now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is home to an impressive Roman house and roof garden. The Baroque monument is one of Europe's largest monasteries and is bound to leave you in awe with its historic battle against earthquakes and volcanic eruptions! Sneak a peek at the art of famous Sicilian architects in the construction of the striking dining hall and library.
3. Catania Beach (La Playa)
Shallow waters, a long sandy strip and plenty of nearby restaurants? Tick! This hotspot sits in front of Mount Etna, and you might even find some parts of the sand that have been darkened by volcanic dust! This sight is truly one to see and guarantees some Insta-worthy pictures. La Playa suits couples and families alike during the day, and many tourists return for the energetic nightlife.
4. Catania Cathedral
Cattedrale Sant'Agata sits proudly within the city’s main square – you can’t miss it! Make a trip to this UNESCO World Heritage Site in the morning as it closes for lunch time. Its divine architecture shines almost blue in the Italian sun. It really should be on your list!
Little tip: You might want to take some coins to light up the electric candles.
5. Fish Market
Feast your eyes on one of Sicily’s colourful markets! You know you’re in the heart of Catania when you hear the fishermen’s calls. Every morning, except Sundays, all kinds of fresh fish from the Ionian Sea are on offer here, with locals in search of their next bargain. You’ll also find fresh fruit and veg, spices and nuts. The terrace overlooking the market is a good spot to capture the scene! Why not try some grilled artichoke when you get peckish?
6. Palazzo Biscari
This early 18th-century gem is built to impress. From grand staircases and fascinating art, to Rococo architecture, you’ll be swept off your feet. The palace will take you back in time to when duchesses and poets frequented the ballroom. You can join a tour of the building, book a public event or keep your eyes peeled for exhibitions!
7. Porta Garibaldi
This famous arc built in 1768 is easy to slot into a busy day seeing the sights of Catania. White limestone and black lava rock from Mount Etna form the historic gate. It’s a great entryway to visiting the Sant’Agata Cathedral, so why not tick two sights off in one day?
8. Roman Amphitheatre
Immerse yourself in Catania’s history with this unique open-air museum. The sunken amphitheatre, once used for gladiator battles and popular events, sat 16,000 guests, and dates all the way back to 300 BC. Piazza Stesicoro is the place to be to get some great shots!
9. Ursino Castle
Plan a visit to Castello Ursino for a taste of royal luxury! This museum, that was once a royal castle of the Kingdom of Sicily, exhibits interesting artefacts and art from the castle and wider area.
