A short ferry ride from the capital Athens lies the dinky Aegina. But don’t be mistaken – it might be small but it has plenty of attractions to its name. Whether you’re into peaceful, sun-soaked shores and pistachio-filled treats or ancient temples and ghostly ruins, everyone will find something to pique their curiosity. We had you at ‘pistachio treats’, didn’t we?
1. Temple of Aphaia
Perched high on a pine-covered hill, Temple of Aphaia is an ancient wonder with a view that’ll make everyone go ‘wow’. Built around 500 BCE, it’s nothing short of miraculous that it still stands proudly today. Marvel at the well-preserved columns, learn about the Greek myths and grab a souvenir at the small gift shop nearby. Oh, and you’ll want to snap a photo with the Aegean Sea gleaming in the background – that much we can guarantee.
2. Moni Island
Just a hop, skip and a jump away lies Moni Island – a diddy plot, but oh, does it pack a punch when it comes to unreal beaches. The ferry takes only 20 minutes too – so there are no excuses left… The island is people-free, but you might spy other habitants there – peacocks and deer! Sporty types can head up the island’s highest point, while those who remember they’re on a holiday can head to the Moni Island Beach. Clear waters shadowed by lush greenery? Count us in.
3. Zenobia Beach
Tucked away like a well-kept secret, Zenobia Beach boasts golden sands, crystal-clear waters and effortlessly chilled vibes. It’s fab for a lazy day of lounging or a splash about in the calm sea. Grab a lounger, spread the SPF and let the gentle waves whisk you into total bliss.
4. Archaeological Museum of Aegina
Step one foot into the past when you visit this duo of ancient delights! The Archaeological Museum is a treasure trove of bygone goodies, from pottery to statues that tell tales of Aegina’s rich history. Once you’ve had your fill of artefacts, wander over to the Temple of Apollo, or what’s left of it — a single, proud column known as Kolona. With the sparkling sea as its backdrop, it’s like a real-life example of what you’ve just seen in the museum!
5. The Ancient Olive Grove
Fancy meeting some of the island’s oldest residents? Head to the Ancient Olive Grove, where centuries-old olive trees whisper myths of the past. It’s a peaceful spot for a strike or even a hike! The ancient trees grow at the foothill of an extinct volcano that holds the title of the highest mountain on the island. Wander up and catch sights of the untouched Greek wildlife and the dazzling sea! There’s a temple, where the first king of the island is said to have lived too.
6. Marathon Beach
Beach bums, rejoice! Marathon Beach is the ultimate spot to kick back, relax and let your worries drift away with the tide. This sandy stretch is a family-friendly haven, ideal for paddling, picnicking or perfecting your tan. The calm, shallow waters are great for a dip, while the nearby tavernas are ready to serve up fresh seafood to fuel your beach day.
7. Aegina Town waterfront
Primed for sunset walks, Aegina Town waterfront is a postcard-worthy promenade buzzing with charm and local life. Watch the fishing boats bobbing lazily in the harbour, browse quaint shops for some pistachio-flavoured souvenirs and grab a gelato (or three). The cafés and restaurants are primed for delicious dishes or people-watching too. The top way to spend an evening? We think so.
8. Souvala Beach
For a beach day with a side of charm, Souvala Beach is your go-to. This laidback spot is ideal for families and foodies, with cosy tavernas dishing out fresh seafood and refreshing drinks next door. If you have the time, stick around for sunset – it’s one of the best places on the island for the evening spectacle.
9-10. Aegina Agios Nektarios Monastery and Paleochora Ghost Village
Once the island’s bustling medieval capital, Paleochora Ghost Village is now a hillside maze of crumbling churches, rustic ruins and time-worn paths. The views from the top? Let’s just say they are worth the climb. It’s eerily quiet, with just the wind and a few curious birds for company, but it makes the whole experience that bit more interesting! On the way there, make sure to stop by Aegina Agios Nektarios Monastery – its architecture will leave you in awe.
