We have loads of choice when it comes to great Greek getaways. So, we get it – it can be tricky to know where’s the perfect match for your wanderlust. To help you narrow down the search for your ultimate destination, we’ve put together a quick guide to the top ten Greek islands.
1. Crete for culture
We have holidays available to Heraklion and Chania in Crete, which means you’ve got the option of both sides of the isle. But don’t let that stop you exploring it all while you’re there! The Venetian harbour in Chania Town is a kaleidoscopic locale that begs to be pottered around. But if it’s a big fix of history you’re hoping for, turn your attention to the Minoan masterpiece – AKA Knossos Palace. From carvings to courtyards, and everything in the museum, let what remains of the ancient city unfold before you!
2. Corfu for beaches
Golden sand and glittering water are the common denominators of the beaches around Corfu. This isle’s got seafronts by the bucketload, so pack up the towel and the sun cream, and come on down. In the west, you’ll find the best of the bunch, though they’re generally wide plots wherever you head, which makes spreading out a doddle. Our faves? They’ve got to be Paleokastritsa, Glyfada and Acharavi!
3. Rhodes for history
History buffs will also be in their element in Rhodes. That’s largely owing to Rhodes Town being UNESCO-badged, and the Acropolis of Lindos dating back to the 8th century BC. Pretty impressive, right? There’s also a medieval castle to get a load of, while you’re peeling back the pages of the past. Monasteries and traditional villages pepper the island too, if you can’t help but experience it all.
4. Santorini for epic sunsets
Known for its whitewashed buildings and blue domes (hello, Three Bells of Fira), Santorini’s got those glossy guidebook good looks in the bag. But its dramatic scenery doesn’t stop there – the eye-popping colours contrast with the jagged cliffsides created by the caldera. You’ll find so many vantage points around the resort of Oia for taking photos – especially at sunset. Pitch up to snap those all-important holiday pictures, or even just enjoy the view as you drink and dine al fresco.
5. Kefalonia for natural beauty
Buttermilk beaches and emerald greenery might be in Kefalonia’s abundant repertoire, yet that certainly isn’t where its natural beauty stops. No, sir – it really comes into its own at the two caves, Drogarati and Melissani, as dazzling blues hypnotise all that visit on boat trips. Hiking around the local sights can unlock photo-worthy landmarks too, like Kipoureon Monastery and Mount Ainos National Park. It’s just a case of where to point your comfy shoes first!
6. Zante for a bit of everything
Zante wears many sunhats – it's got chalky-cliff-backed beaches for the fly-and-flop types, party-ready bars for night owls, and waterparks for families. Smuggler’s Cove is the most popular patch of sand there, where loggerhead turtles often nest, and an old shipwreck sits smack in the middle. The Blue Caves are worth setting sail around, and Zante Town’s a winner for the culture vultures and cocktail sippers. Laganas and ‘big nights out’ are synonymous, but if you’re whisking the kids away rather than going with pals, Luna Fun Park is Tsilivi’s ace up its sleeve.
7. Lefkas for sports
Whether you like them on dry land or in the water, Lefkas is the island for sports. Vasiliki is the central hub of all things active, where you can admire idyllic waterfront views, as well as olive groves in abundance as you approach Nidri. The latter’s famous for its waterfall, which you can rent a bike and cycle to. Back by the shoreline, you’ll find wellness is at the fore, with yoga classes being offered. Plus, you can try out surfing, windsurfing and paddleboarding – they're all popular with the locals!
8. Kos for neon nightlife
If late, lively nights sound like a bit of you, Kos will welcome you with open arms – and bustling dancefloors. Get ready to move and shake your way across its many clubs, especially in Kardamena. The aptly dubbed ‘Bar Street’ does exactly what it says on the tin. Up for a night out without seeing sunrise? You can equally do things on a lower-key level and hit a bar that’s known for its live music, such as jazz or blues.
9. Skiathos for quad biking
Thrill-seekers, rejoice! Skiathos is a stunner, promising twinkling turquoise water that laps the beachfronts, plus boat trips galore to Skopelos for Mamma Mia! fans. If something higher-octane is in mind (and your travel insurance permits – be sure to check), hire a quad bike, don your helmet and set off up the hillsides! We recommend taking the dirt-track route to Krifi Ammos, a hidden-away cove in the west which shows off jaw-dropping rock formations. Just take note that there’s a steep descent to walk down once you’ve parked, then back up again.
10. Lesvos for ouzo
Rich in culture and very much a purveyor of Mediterranean food too, Lesvos has Greek island holidays sorted. It isn’t without its niches though – and that’s where its ouzo production comes in. This aniseed liqueur has long been produced on the isle, and it’s designed to pair well as an aperitif with appetisers, though you may wish to sip it after dessert. People usually consider it Greece’s national drink, so bottoms up!
