Where to stay
Conil de la Frontera
Want to wake up to the sound of waves? This whitewashed town knows a thing or two about laidback beach breaks. Down by the shore, you can dive into water sports or simply bask in the sunshine. Over in the Old Town, the streets are brimming with tapas bars and quirky boutique shops, so dinner dates are definitely on the cards.
El Puerto de Santa María
It’s a blissful blend of blonde beaches and historical hotspots here in this pretty port town. And did you know it’s also home to the Osborne Bodega? This is El Puerto de Santa María’s best-known sherry winery and one of Spain’s oldest companies, offering tours and tastings to all who visit. And don’t miss a trip to the iconic San Marcos Castle before spending a quiet moment strolling hand-in-hand along the seafront.
Novo Sancti Petri
Powdery white beaches, great golf courses and a medley of magnificent eateries... this sun-speckled resort is an enchanting escape for any couple. Sit side-by-side in one of the local restaurants, sharing some authentic food and a glass of sherry, before heading down to the majestic sands to catch the sunset.
Cadiz
Cadiz is the Costa de la Luz’s sun-soaked city, where you can explore historic sights and enjoy the buzz of lively local festivals. At the Mercado Central Cádiz, shop for farm-fresh produce and soak up the buzzy atmosphere. Why not do as the locals do and pick up some picky bits for a picnic? Playa de la Victoria would be the perfect place to tuck in with its 3km of soft sand.
What to see and do
Practise your swing on world-class golf courses
If you love nothing more than teeing off together, you’re in luck. The Costa de la Luz is home to some of Spain’s finest golf courses, combining stunning scenery with top-notch facilities. Perfect your putt together against backdrops of rolling dunes or ocean views. Sounds like bliss, right?
Catch a flamenco show
For couples that love lapping up the local culture, a traditional flamenco show could be just the ticket. And nothing says passion and romance quite like flamenco! Go on the hunt for a local performance, where dancers in their traditional dress stomp and swirl to the soulful music of guitars. It’s an electrifying mix of rhythm and emotion that’s sure to leave you captivated.
Go hiking
If you’re a sporty couple with a love for all things outdoors, you’ll adore the hiking trails here. Whether you’re trekking through lush forests, admiring dramatic mountain landscapes or taking a relaxed stroll through the whitewashed hillside villages, the Costa de la Luz has something to suit every hiker. There’s no better way to see the true beauty of this fantastic region.
Visit the Royal Andalusian School of Equestrian Art
A visit to this prestigious school is a unique experience you can only find here in the Costa de la Luz. It showcases the elegance and flair of equestrian riding and classical dressage, while highlighting it as a longstanding tradition in the area’s culture. Why not take a guided tour of the museum? It’ll teach you about the history and show you the saddlery, as well as harnesses and traditional equestrian costumes.
Laze on sun-kissed beaches
Between sweeping swathes of silky sands and pebbly plots, the Costa de la Luz invites you to throw down your towel and embrace the holiday spirit. Playa de la Barrosa is your spot for swimming thanks to its crystal-clear waters, while pine-fringed Playa de la Puntilla is popular with sun-seekers and surfers alike.
What to eat and drink
Sample the tapas culture
Tapas culture is all about getting together to share spall plates of mouthwatering dishes. As you can imagine, due to its coastal location, there are plenty of fishy dishes like fresh anchovies, AKA boquerones, but you’ll also find regional favourites like melt-in-the-mouth jamón and tapas staples such as patatas bravas.
Tuck into fresh seafood
No trip to this cool coastline is complete without indulging in the region’s fresh seafood. Bluefin tuna is a favourite around these parts, especially in Zahara de los Atunes, the resort that takes its name from La Iglesia Del Carmen Church where tuna was once caught, prepared and salted. Prawns are pretty popular too and are best enjoyed grilled in a chiringuito (beach bar) or served up as a tiny tapas dish.
Sip your way around the 'Sherry Triangle'
Looking for a tipple tasting experience with your other half? Look no further. Take your pick from a bounty of Bodegas where you can learn about the unique ageing process and of course, try the world-class sherry this remarkable region is renowned for. It’s the perfect way to sample the local culture and raise a glass to an unforgettable Spanish adventure.
