Our guide to Berlin restaurants

From budget bites to splashing the cash, here are some of the best places to eat in Berlin. Go on, tuck in…

Berlin is a haven for foodies and with more than 7,000 spots to choose from, you’re sure to find your match. From bargain bites to some seriously gourmet gorging, there’s something for all tastes and budgets, even veggies and vegans!

A third of Brits have either reduced the amount of meat they eat or stopped eating meat altogether according to statistics from the Vegan Society and if you’re one of them, you’ll be spoilt for choice here in the German capital.

Here’s our round up of some of the best places to eat in Berlin…

Silo coffee

Get your caffeine fix at this Friedrichshain coffee spot. As well as great drinks and a delicious brunch offering, the interiors are well worth a mention. The exposed stone walls, wooden tables and rustic colour palettes make it the ideal meeting place. Silo roasts its own coffee at their own roastery, Fjord coffee, with a big focus on all things fair-trade. When it comes to the food, avocado is the star of the show, with poached eggs and bacon also making regular appearances. The presentation is one of the café’s strong points, they even serve the juices in mini milk bottles. It’s cash only so don’t forget your Euros.

Grill Royal

As far as Berlin restaurants go, this sizzling steakhouse has quite a quirky rep. In fact, past reviews from some pretty reputable sources have included ‘It’s the restaurant people love to hate’ (Louis Vuitton Guide 2011) and ‘a platinum card is a handy accessory at this look-at-me-temple’ (Lonely Planet). Anyway, back to the beef… think Black Angus, Irish Hereford and Wagyu to name but three. But it’s not all about the meat, Grill Royal also serves stunning seafood and wonderful wines.

FACIL

Dishing up perfectly presented plates in a suitably chic setting is fabulous FACIL. It shines bright thanks to two glistening Michelin stars and the restaurant prides itself on the use of local quality ingredients that are typical of the season. Check out the tasting menus, some are eight courses so bring your appetite, but be prepared to pay the gourmet price tag.

Gasthaus Kater Alex

For an authentic experience check out Gasthaus Kater Alex in Charlottenburg. Highly praised for their giant schnitzels (a crispy breaded meat that’s a German speciality), this is perfect for anyone who’s feeling especially peckish after a long day of exploring! The setting’s casual, but the prices are really reasonable.

Supreme Burger Grill & Bar

Supreme Burger Grill & Bar is just the type of hipster burger joint you’d expect from Berlin. Think eclectic décor with industrial-style interiors. When it comes to the nosh, the burgers are served on branded wooden trays in huge portions, with juicy beef patties in soft sesame seed buns and a whole choice of extra toppings. Oh and a generous scoop of fries. There are lots of veggie options too.

Club-Restaurant Das Team "Die Eselin von A."

If you’re looking for romance, it doesn’t get better than this. This lovely lakeside spot is simply spectacular, especially if you can time your dinner with the sunset. Club-Restaurant Das Team "Die Eselin von A." dishes up everything from traditional German specialities to Mediterranean morsels. And the views? They’re guaranteed to wow.
