A shimmering pearl in the azure Aegean, Skiathos is the shining star of the Sporades. It’s small in size but big on beautiful beaches, spectacular scenery and classic cuisine. Tempted? Who wouldn’t be? We’ve put together our top ten things to do so you can make the most of your next Greek getaway.
1. Relax on the beautiful beaches
Golden sands, secluded coves and clear waters, Skiathos has well and truly hit the beach jackpot. In fact, there are more than 60 silky sweeps to hop between! Koukounaries Beach is the best-known, gifting sun-seekers with a dramatic stretch of caramel-coloured sands backed by electric-green pines. It’s part of a protected nature reserve, so pause your tanning time to explore the wetlands, where you can spot rare species of migrating birds. Lalaria Beach, framed by limestone cliffs, is another unspoilt treasure. It’s only accessible by boat, which means less crowds and more space for undisturbed daytime flopping. At Banana Beach good times are guaranteed, so soak up the sun or grab a pedalo and bob along the coast.
2. Get out on foot
Skiathos is a haven for hikers thanks to its lush interior that’s criss-crossed with walking trails. There are more than 20 well-marked pathways, which meander through fragrant pine forests, river valleys and sleepy hilltop villages. It doesn’t matter if you’re a seasoned stroller or a rookie rambler, as there’s a variety of routes to enjoy, from gentle plateaus to steep climbs. Be sure to have your camera ready as many of these treks have got the wow-factor when it comes to vistas.
3. Visit the Monastery of Evangelistria
Just 5km north of Skiathos Town, nestled among ancient vineyards and olive groves, you’ll find the Monastery of Evangelistria. It’s free to visit, so why not take a look around and delve deeper into its fascinating history? The Greek flag was raised for the first time here in 1807. Outside, there’s a flower-filled courtyard, while inside, there are chapels filled with frescoes and a collection of ancient manuscripts. It’s also a great place to grab some souvenirs, as wine, olive oil and honey are all made here by the monks who live on-site.
4. Sample traditional treats
Blissful breakfasts, long lunches and al fresco dinners are all on the menu in Skiathos. For a true taste of Greece, try a traditional taverna, where you’ll be greeted with a warm welcome and you’ll leave with a full stomach. Seafood is king, with boats delivering daily hauls of fresh fish, much to the delight of hungry holidaymakers. Bag yourself a table at a waterfront restaurant and tuck in to grilled octopus marinated in white wine and lemon, with a side of feta salad. Wash it down with an aniseed-flavoured ouzo or an ice-cold Mythos beer. Yamas! Sweet treats come in the form of amygdalota, chewy, almond biscuits. Having just one is impossible, so make sure to save some room.
5. Uncover medieval Kastro
The abandoned clifftop town of Kastro offers a fascinating insight into Skiathos’ past. Located on the northernmost tip of the island, the easiest way to reach it is by hopping on a boat from the harbour. It was once the island’s capital, built to protect locals from plundering pirates. Nowadays, you can roam the ruins of the town walls and remnants of an Ottoman Mosque. The sweeping sea views are an added bonus, so don’t forget to take some holiday snaps! Once you’ve had your fill of culture, there’s a secluded beach just a stone’s throw away.
6. Learn about Skiathos' famous author
Did you know that the famous Greek author Alexandros Papadiamantis was born in Skiathos? If you’re a keen bookworm or simply interested in culture, then visiting the Papadiamantis House Museum is essential. It’s just a short walk from the harbour and located in the same house that he grew up in during the 1800s. In recent years, the property has been converted into an exhibit dedicated to his life work. Inside you can see some personal artefacts, as well as an impressive collection of manuscripts!
7. Explore Skiathos Town
The buzzing heart of the island has got the VIP vote, loved by celebrities like Kate Moss and Richard Branson. The narrow alleyways are lined with designer boutiques and high-end eateries and the harbour is stuffed with super-sized yachts. At night the streets come alive, with a plethora of bars and clubs for all-night dancing. Away from the glitz and glamour, the Old Town offers up a piece of go-slow Greece. It’s full of old-school charm, where local life hums along behind sea-blue shutters.
8. Go shopping on Papadiamantis Street
Avid shoppers will find everything they need along Skiathos Town’s central street, Papadiamantis. There’s a string of boutiques, stacks of souvenir stores and artisan sellers aplenty. You’ll see locals selling one-of-a-kind ceramics, hand-crafted jewellery and so much more. Make sure to look out for books by the Greek author. Many of the shops stay open late so you can do a spot of bargain-hunting after dinner.
9. Admire Agios Nikolaos Church and Tower
If visiting Skiathos’ cultural highlights is top of your holiday agenda, then you’ll want to tick Agios Nikolaos Church and Clock Tower off your list. They can be found perched above the picturesque harbour of Skiathos Town. Design buffs can check out the church’s traditional Greek architecture, before marvelling at some of the best views on the island. Head up here in the early evening and watch the sun brushstroke the town in oranges and reds.
10. Discover the underwater world
Skiathos’ clear waters make it a paradise for snorkelers and divers. Most diving centres are found in the south of the island, operating from popular beaches such as Koukounaries and Vassilias. Embark on an aquatic adventure and explore the shipwrecks and reefs that are dotted off the coast.
