Terracotta-tinged volcanoes? Pine-speckled plateaus? Inky-black beaches? Lanzarote’s natural canvas is all kinds of spectacular. And it’s even more showstopping come sunset, when the sky transforms into a colourful collage of oranges and reds. We’ve whittled down some of the best spots on the island to catch the day’s most epic event, so clear your diary (and your camera roll) and pull up a front row seat here…
Marina Rubicon
Mooch down to the glitzy Marina Rubicon and see out the day at one of the waterfront restaurants or bars. Watch the yachts bob up and down as you sip on a cocktail, then head off for a spot of souvenir shopping.
Faro de Punta Pechiguera
Venture to Lanzarote’s most southern tip and you’ll spot this flashing lighthouse. The building itself isn’t anything special, but the views out across the Atlantic are camera-ready alright! The coastal path which leads here from Playa Blanca is a joy in itself. It’s nice and flat, so it’s primed for leisurely ambles.
Arrecife Gran Hotel & Spa
This hotel boasts a picturesque postcode on the capital’s golden Playa del Reducto. You can catch some sunset serenity from the Blue 17 Roof Top Restaurant & Bar, which dishes up healthy meals with a side of ocean vistas. There are often DJ events and jazz music played here too!
El Lago Verde
Take a trip to El Lago Verde before the stars come out and get ready to step into a postcard from another planet. This half-moon shaped lagoon gets its name from the vibrant colour of its waters. Take in the striking shades of green against the black-sand beach and rust-red volcano cones.
Timanfaya National Park
The uniqueness of Lanzarote’s landscape is on full display at Timanfaya National Park. For dinner with a twist, book a table at the El Diablo restaurant. The venue’s floor-to-ceiling windows offer the perfect vantage point for watching the sunset paint the park’s more than 100 volcanoes in honey-gold hues. And if that wasn’t special enough, the food is cooked using geothermal heat – the temperature below ground sizzles at 600 degrees centigrade!
Famara Beach
Tucked away on the island’s north coast, Famara Beach delivers drama with a capital D. As the sun makes its dazzling descent, the volcanic cliffs which cradle the bay are coated in a kaleidoscope of colours. Soak up the scenery from the sands or head up to the El Mirador del Risco de Famara viewpoint for an is-this-real experience.
Mirador del Río
Designed by Cesar Manrique, the Mirador del Rio viewpoint clinches the crown for best panoramas, dangling at nearly 500 metres above sea level. As evening falls, it reaches its peak Instagram state, serving up sweeping vistas of the neighbouring island of La Graciosa.
Playa Papagayo
Lanzarote’s best-loved beach is at its most eye-catching at sunset when the silky sands and rugged cliffs are silhouetted against a flaming sky. Pitch up at the chiringuito which overlooks it, order an ice-cold mojito and see if you can pick out Fuerteventura twinkling in the distance.
Los Hervideros
These underwater sea caves are impressive at any hour but take on a magic of their own as dusk approaches. Appreciate the power of Mother Nature as the waves crash through the labyrinth of lava-sculpted formations, shooting water high into the air. It’s time to get snap-happy…
