Saalbach, Austria

Fly to: Salzburg

Travelling with a bunch of skiers and boarders with mixed abilities? Saalbach has got you covered. There’s a handy beginner's area, which is close to the main street, so it’s easy to get to in all your gear. And while the newbies are building up their confidence, the more seasoned pros can clock up the kilometres exploring the 408km Skicircus.

When ski school pauses for lunch, rest and refuel together in one of the mountain restaurants. Check out Luis Alm at the top of the G1 Bernkogelbahn gondola. There’s plenty of space for you and your clan on the sun terrace, plus it can be reached by non-skiers too. Once the lifts close for the day, make the most of the resort’s après activities. We’re talking ice skating and snowmobiling, as well as buzzing bars and cosy cocktail spots.

Sauze d’Oulx, Italy

Fly to: Turin

If you’re looking for a place where the après is as big a draw as the slopes, then say buongiorno to Sauze d’Oulx. For starters, you’ll have access to 400km of linked slopes across five resorts in the Milky Way. Beginners can take their pick of the English-speaking ski schools. And if you’re nervous about braving a chairlift on day one, there’s a bus which runs from the town centre to the Sportinia chairlift.

For intermediates, there are some fab, tree-lined reds from the top of the Moncrons lift. Think you’re an expert? Head over to neighbouring Sestriere and whizz down the Kandahar Banchetta. This black run has played host to both the men’s and women’s downhill races. Short transfers, great-value accommodation and vibrant nightlife all add to the appeal for groups.

Tignes, France

Fly to: Chambery

This French fave welcomes friends and families with open arms and wide slopes. We all know how difficult it can be to get a date in the diary that works for everyone, but thanks to the resort’s height, the ski season here often runs into May. Tignes is made up of several villages, so you can settle on where to stay depending on what works for you. If convenience and atmosphere are key, opt for Val Claret. It has the best access to the glacier and lots of ski-in, ski-out accommodation options. Travelling with kids or just prefer something quieter? Le Lavachet, Tignes 1800 or Les Brévières might suit you better.

Les Deux Alpes, France

Fly to: Grenoble

As a beginner, there’s nothing worse than feeling like you’re stuck at the bottom of the mountain, while everyone else gets to enjoy the knockout views and better conditions at the top. Well, you won’t have this problem in Les Deux Alpes! Here, many of the blues are up on the Glacier du Mont de Lans. While learners snowplough their way down, the more advanced in the group can enjoy pillow-soft, off-piste slopes in La Grave. In the town, most properties are just a short walk to the lifts — essential when wearing ski boots! Plus, you’ll find a couple of half-board hotels. No need to cook up a feast or try out your best GCSE French booking a restaurant? We’re sold.
