Things to do

The best ski festivals to visit

Why not plan a ski trip around one of the best festivals in Europe? There are plenty to pick from…

Ski resorts don’t do things by halves when it comes to putting on a show on the snow. Many of the top spots around Europe double up as festival hosts throughout the calendar. So, if you’re planning to hit the pistes at some point over the season, why not make your trip coincide with one of the best ski festivals in Europe?

We’ve lifted the lid on five of our fave festivals spread across some of our most renowned ski resorts, to help you pick the perfect event.

Rock the Pistes

Get more out of Morzine when you head over for the 10th anniversary of Rock the Pistes! From 15-20 March 2020, five live concerts will be held in a few different locations around the Portes du Soleil area of the French/Swiss border. It’s a biggie too – 28,000 festival-goers usually grab tickets, so why not get involved? While the likes of Pete Doherty and the Klaxons have taken centre stage before, the Stranglers and Skip the Use are on the billing for 2020. And to make things even more exciting, you can ski from one gig to the next.

Into chart-toppers? Make a beeline for Mayrhofen for the acclaimed Snowbombing festival. Having started back in 2000, it’s been on the block a while. Calvin Harris, Dizzee Rascal and Biffy Clyro are just a trio of the acts that have played, but are you ready for Liam Gallagher, the Streets and Foals? Yep, it’s shaping up to be a good one next year, so add the slightly late ski season dates of 13-18 April 2020 to your diary. With forest parties, igloo raves and spa hangouts all part and parcel of it too, you’ll be in your element.

Avoriaz’s Snowboxx is another winner. Let the French Alps be your gateway to the world’s largest ski area, where open-air stages welcome huge-name international EDM DJs and live acts with open arms. And to go one extra, you’ll even have epic après parties to look forward to. So, block out 21-28 March on your calendar and prepare for music, mountains and more. While Stormzy, Loyle Carner and Fatboy Slim have been among the modern-day legends to grace the stages before, you’re looking at Annie Mac, the Sugarhill Gang and Jaguar Skills for 2020. Bonus – spa and wellness facilities will also be on hand to soothe you when you want a break. It’s no wonder previously partnered with Snowboxx festival!

Rise Festival

Kick off the ski season in style at Rise Festival, held in Les Deux Alpes from 12-19 December 2020. It prides itself on being one for adventurers, with a range of snow-based activities, music and festivities open to you throughout the week. From the on-the-rise Bingo’s Bingo to global hip-hop and R&B celebrations, with disco tunes thrown in for good measure, you’ll have bags to get stuck into when you aren’t skiing. Get to know the main stage, arena, après shows and cute festival village.

Tomorrowland Winter

Over in Alpe d’Huez, the epic Tomorrowland festival brings its winter edition to the masses. The so-called People of Tomorrow flock here, all dressed up in wavy outfits, fancy dress costumes and crazy props. The fantasy-style layout of the stages will be set up for 14-21 March 2020, and you can bank on the trifecta of ski, music and parties to complete the experience. If glitter, faux fur, fairy wings, glow sticks, woollens, neon lights, pyrotechnics and full-throttle whimsy are all up your street, these are the pistes to be on!

Ready to revel in one of the best ski festivals in Europe? It’s time to dig out your suitcase and salopettes, and set your sights on ski deals now.
