On your first day, you can explore Buda. There’s a wealth of UNESCO-stamped buildings for you to explore like the epic Fisherman’s Bastion. Gran Canaria

Trying to make the most of your annual leave and want some sun to boot? Gran Canaria is a sublime spot where the sun shines all year round. It’s fit for any mood and full to the brim with fun-loving beachside resorts! The local beer can be as little as £1.80, making Playa Del Ingles the bargain hotspot, while its bar-filled commercial centres make it ideal day or night. If you’d prefer a more chilled experience, make a beeline for Meloneras’ laidback waterside dining experience.

If the bar scene isn’t your style, don’t worry – Gran Canaria is teeming with beautiful scenes. Check out the enchanting Maspalomas Sand Dunes for a Mars-like outing as the peaks seem to go on forever. Traverse the sands by foot or even by buggy! Avid adventurers can head to the Nublo Rural Park, a hiker’s paradise where the trails are what dreams are made of. Slap-bang in the middle of the lush national park is Roque Nublo, AKA ‘Cloud Rock’. Standing at a massive 80 metres high, it’s monolithic in appearance and it has felt incredibly spiritual to its native islanders for centuries. What’s more, we recommend hiring a car to make the most of your getaway.

Fuerteventura

We reckon there’s too much in Fuerteventura for simply a short break, as this destination is chock-full of Caribbean-esque beaches, wild water sports and relaxed seaside resorts. A low-key place to rest and recover, and known as the beach capital of the Canary Islands there’s are heaps of patches you can idle on. Wandering walker? Fuerteventura has plenty of flat routes that wind round the island!

Culture-cravers, get a load of everything from volcanic landscapes to imposing fortresses. Hit up Castillo de El Toston for a dose of history – once an important coastal defence fort, it now hosts contemporary art exhibitions. Shopaholics will be drawn to the big, bold capital Santa Cruz with its street markets on Sundays – it really is a shopper’s paradise. Looking for knick-knacks and souvenirs? The Bohemian Market has stalls aplenty, offering locally made crafts ranging from jewellery to African-inspired clothing and artefacts.

Madeira

Those of you into outdoorsy experiences, cultural twists and year-round sunshine, keep reading. Madeira is made for a longer holiday, because it has ample levadas to explore – are mini-canals that bring water down from the lush mountains. Head to Levada do Norte, one of the largest water channels on the island. This easy and pleasant trail starts below the Cabo Girāo viewing point and stretches west towards the Bao Morte area in Ribeira Brava. Feel free to stop for a break on your travels and absorb the beautiful scenery.

For more scenery, board the car to the mountaintop village and you’ll get a bird’s eye view of Funchal. One of the favourite local delicacies is black scabbardfish and, although it may look scary, it tastes surprisingly tasty. If you fancy something different, try the espada com banana, AKA deep-fried scabbardfish with grilled bananas on top. Delicious! And among Madeira’s most famous exports is wine, so we vote you should have a tasting at Blandy's Wine Lodge.
