An idyllic island paradise without the Caribbean flight times? We’re here to put Symi holidays on the map. Floating off Turkey’s western coast and north of the popular holiday hotspot Rhodes, the dinky isle of Symi is destined to wow with its all-out authenticity and unspoilt allure.
Perfection comes in pocket-sized parcels round these parts, from the teeny towns to the island’s quirks and charms. So, settle in as we take you on a tour of this dainty Dodecanese daydream spot and hunt down those hidden treasures.

A lasting first impression
Symi’s the epitome of Greek gorgeousness with its colour-splashing towns, captivating culture and a dash of cosmo glamour. Mansions in a sweet-shop palette of lemon-yellows, burnt ambers and that Grecian blue tumble down the hillside towards the island’s harbour, Gialos. They say a picture speaks a thousand words, and this is one that’ll stick in your mind as soon as it sweeps into view.
Your perfect resort
Low-key and lovely are what Symi’s resorts are all about. Symi Town is the island’s hub, with its hilly backdrop and colour-popping neoclassical houses. It’s where most of the islanders call home, and it’s easy to see why! If a peaceful retreat is what you’re dreaming of, you’ll find postcard perfection in Pedi.

Old Town enchantment
Take the rainbow trail between the pretty houses to Horio, Symi’s centre. It can be reached via the Kali Strata, which has 500 steps (yep, 500!), so be prepared for a tiring climb! Exhausting? Yes. But utterly magical? Certainly. This wonderful wander promises colour, beauty and, above all, charm. Admire the pastel-painted scenes from the top, with views over the mountains, ocean and beyond.
Unmissable sights
Immerse yourself in Symi’s history and culture with a visit to Panormitis Monastery, which is thought to date back to the 18th century. From the outside, the impressive structure dazzles with its whitewashed façade and skyline-studding baroque bell tower (the world’s largest, to be exact!). Not to mention the incredible shorefront setting. But step inside and prepare to be captivated by Byzantine frescoes and intricated wooden carvings, as well as monochrome-tiled courtyards and a duo of museums.

Take away trinkets
Souvenir-seekers, behold… from glassware to pottery, fashion to artwork, if browsing local shops is top of your to-do list, Symi island will be right up your street. Check out the stores that pepper the harbour or take a break on your 500-step Kala Strata climb with a stop-off in the shops en route! It’s a win-win!
Symi shrimp
Seafood enthusiasts, two words: ‘Symi shrimp’ (simiako garidaki)! Bright red in colour and found in the waters surrounding the island, this tiny, unique shrimp variety has become something of a delicacy here! They’re normally served simply with garlic and olive oil, seasoned with salt and pepper.

A day trip to Rhodes
All aboard! Catch the ferry to Rhodes for a history-packed adventure. The journey takes around an hour, and the reward at the end is priceless. Weave among the web of higgledy-piggledy alleyways in Rhodes Town, Europe’s oldest inhabited medieval town, and marvel at gothic architecture that lies within the impressive fortress walls. Feeling peckish? Courtyard tavernas and street-spilling eateries are easy to stumble across, then it’s back to the bougainvillea-draped centre for more exploring…
After-dark delights
Dine in one of Symi’s atmospheric waterfront restaurants as the sun sinks. Blue-and-white tablecloths set the scene for a traditional Greek experience, with ribbons of seafood-tangled spaghetti and fresh lobster playing a starring role on menus. For post-dinner drinks, take your pick of cool cocktails bars and unwind to the sound of gentle jazz… ah, this is the life!
Swayed by the sound of a Symi holiday? Who can blame you?
