Getting lost among the labyrinth of the souks is a rite of passage on any trip to Morocco. It’s where the scents of spices intertwine with the smell of earthy leather, and nearby restaurants exude traces of freshly cooked tagines. But with so many trinkets and treasures on offer, it can sometimes feel a bit overwhelming. That’s why we’ve put together this handy guide on what souvenirs to buy in the souks. Remember to be prepared to haggle!

Argan oil
Not only is it tasty in any Moroccan dish, but it also works a charm on the hair and skin. Make sure to check for colour, texture and smell before purchasing!

Spices
As soon as you hit the souks, the sensational smell of spices fills the air. And these multicoloured stalls sell everything from paprika and cumin to cinnamon and cloves. They make a great inexpensive gift for family and friends, plus they’re easy to transport!

Berber carpets
These kaleidoscopic rugs are probably one of the first things you’ll notice when you enter the souks, with the ochre alleyways draped in every colour of Berber rugs you can think of.

Handwoven cushions
Scatter cushions are perfect if you want to subtly spice up your home with a little piece of Morocco. You can buy the full cushion or just the covers, making it easy to stash them in your suitcase!

Leather goods
From pointy-toed babouche slippers to handbags, you’ll find plenty of leather goods on offer. The leather here mainly comes from goats and camels but you’re also likely to find cow leather too.

Tagines
Fancy recreating your favourite Moroccan dish back home? Buy a clay tagine and you could do just that. Whether you opt for traditional terracotta or pick up something a little brighter, these handcrafted pots are the ideal addition to your kitchen.

Hand-painted plates
The souks are a haven for ceramic souvenirs, with most stalls selling hand-painted plates in every size and colour you can think of. You can even pick up items for as little as £2!

Jewellery
Necklaces, earrings or chunky bangles – there’s all sorts of bling to be had here. You can pick up some real gold and silver pieces too, but just make sure they have their accompanying certification.

Trinket boxes
When you’ve bought all that jewellery, you’ll need somewhere to keep it, right? Pick up one of these embellished boxes and keep your dressing table look pretty.

Teapots
Fuel your mint tea addiction back home with a silver teapot. They come in a range of sizes, from cheap metals to real silver.

Lanterns
Whether you pop them in your garden to glisten in the sunshine or hang them in your hallway, these intricate lanterns are sure to be the envy of all your visitors.

Magnets
What better way to keep those holiday memories alive than sticking a Moroccan magnet on your fridge? Between camels and the Hamsa hand, these classic souvenirs come in all shapes and sizes.

Silk scarves
A rainbow of silky scarves lines the souks walls. Why not pick up one to throw over your evening outfit? With so many colours and patterns, the options are endless.
