The resort

Sestriere sits at 2,035m above sea level in the Piedmont region of north-west Italy, right near the French border. It was purpose-built for skiing back in the 1930s, so you can expect all the amenities you could need on your doorstep. The resort itself is compact and walkable, with a mix of hotels, apartments and chalet-style lodgings. Bit of a foodie? Rich pasta dishes, creamy risottos and wood-fired pizzas are all on the menu. You can even ski into mountain huts like Rifugio Troncea, order a steaming bowl of polenta and watch the snow fall outside. In the village, try Il Centro for hearty Italian fare or Pinky’s for a relaxed, family-friendly dinner.

The slopes

Sestriere has plenty to keep you busy and something for all ski levels. It co-hosted events during one of the most famous winter sporting competitions in 2006, after all. The nursery area is near the village, which makes it a doddle for your first day on the slopes. Once you’re ready to venture further, there are lots of wide, blue runs with great views. More of an intermediate? The network of red runs is on hand to help you hone your skills. There are several black runs to test your mettle on, including the Kandahar Banchetta, an Olympic downhill course that’s fast and thrilling. And the snow? Reliable, thanks to the high altitude and modern snowmaking system.

The après

What’s a ski or snowboarding trip without a well-earned drink (or three) after a day on the mountain? Although Sestriere’s après scene is laidback compared to its neighbour, Sauze d’Oulx, you can still find a buzz if you know where to look. Here, it’s more about sharing a spritz, tucking into mountain food and maybe dancing to some Europop if the mood strikes. You can kickstart your après adventures right at the bottom of the slopes – I.Gloo - Skybar and Food is a great spot for a beer or a bombardino (think eggnog meets espresso and brandy). If you’re up for keeping the night going, Tabata Nightclub is open late. For casual drinks and live music, set your sights on Bar Sestriere or Kovo Pub.

Need to unwind? Head to one of the spas to soak those muscles. Treat yourself to a massage – your body will thank you! The Espace San Bernardo spa in the nearby village offers pools, wellness treatments and relaxation areas.
