Romantic things to do in Faro

From deserted beaches to cosy restaurants, Faro is a couple’s paradise.

Journey to Portugal’s deep south and discover Faro, the region’s capital. This sun-kissed city in the Algarve is the perfect destination for a romantic break, with plenty of swoon-worthy places that’ll make you fall in love all over again.

Faro has a traditional charm not seen in some of the main resorts of southern Portugal and we think it might just melt your heart. Here’s our guide to the perfect loved-up things to do in Faro.

Sail to a desert island

There are several glorious sandy beaches near Faro where you can spend hours relaxing, but you can really get away from it all at Ilha Deserta (Desert Island).

It’s only reachable by ferry or private water taxi from the city, but well worth making the trip. What awaits you after you’ve weaved through a maze of wetland channels is more than six miles of sweeping golden sands. Flamingos may even greet your arrival. Frolic in the sun and take a dip in the warm shallow waters.

Explore Faro’s Old Town

Wandering hand in hand through the city’s atmospheric old town is a blissful experience. The Cidade Vella, as it’s called in Portuguese, is charming in every way. Cobbled streets lined with rows of orange trees make it a joy to explore on foot in the sunshine. Capture the moment by taking a selfie in front of the ancient cathedral and bishop’s palace in the main square.

When you’ve finished admiring the old buildings and exploring the city walls, pick up souvenirs from the craft market. You can also stop off for some freshly caught seafood or coffee and cake at one of the delightful cafes and restaurants dotted around the neighbourhood.

Sunset boat trip on the water

There are few things more romantic than a sunset boat trip. Take an excursion on a traditional Portuguese boat at dusk to see the natural spectacle of watching the sun set over the Ria Formosa Natural Park.

This lush oasis, east of Faro, is one of the most beautiful protected areas in the Algarve and one of the Seven Natural Wonders of Portugal. It’s a truly memorable experience that you can share with that special someone and perhaps even enjoy a glass of fizz as the sun melts from the sky.

Take a romantic trip up the cathedral

Faro Cathedral, known as Sé locally, is a pretty attraction to visit together. It was built in the 13th century, with Renaissance, Gothic and baroque features added over the years following a devastating earthquake.

Admire the façade before heading inside to climb the stairs up to the rooftop. From here, you can enjoy sweeping views across the city with your loved one.

Dine in style

Finish off your day in Faro with a romantic meal for two. O Castelo offers panoramic sea views and a menu packed with tasty Mediterranean dishes. After you’ve eaten, take cocktails onto the terrace to enjoy the spectacular sunset.

If you’re feeling the love for Faro...
