Our Head of Product gives us the lowdown on cycling holidays

We catch up with Zoe Towers, our Head of Product, to find out why you should go on a cycling holiday this summer...

Whether you love cycling and want to give it a go abroad or you fancy trying something new on your next holiday, you’ll love our chat with our Head of Product, Zoe Towers...

Hi Zoe. Why do you love cycling?

“The sense of freedom and switching off. You can’t be constantly checking your phone when you’re on a bike. I love exploring roads less travelled, and there’s always that sense of achievement when you try something new or ride a little further or faster. And then there’s the social side – joining a cycling club has really expanded my social circle and introduced me to a whole new group of friends.”

What’s your favourite Jet2 destination to cycle in?

“That’s far too hard to choose! We’ve ticked off bucket-list climbs like Sa Calobra in Majorca and Coll de Rates on the Costa Blanca on our road bikes. But we’ve also had amazing e-bike adventures exploring the hills around Florence and zooming down the Amalfi Coast to Positano. Honestly, there are very few destinations that aren’t even better by bike.”

What top tip would you give to people going cycling abroad for the first time?

“Start somewhere with great cycling infrastructure, like Majorca. In spring and autumn, it’s a cyclist’s paradise, with routes and facilities for everyone, from complete beginners to seasoned riders. There are plenty of bike shops, services and fellow cyclists around too, which gives you that extra bit of reassurance if you need help.”

What are your essential items to pack when you go away on a cycling holiday?

“First, a sense of adventure. Even when me and my partner aren’t on a dedicated cycling holiday, we’ll always seek out e-bikes or a local bike tour to explore somewhere properly. The other essential is a fully charged phone with Strava – perfect for route planning, navigation and, of course, posting your ride afterwards to always look back on.”

Psst, why not join our Jet2 Strava Club

What’s on offer at Jet2 to make your cycling holiday easier?

“It starts at the airport, with lots of friendly staff to help you on your way – especially reassuring if you’re travelling with your own bike. There’s a generous 32kg bike carriage allowance for road and mountain bikes, and if you’re booking with Jet2holidays, there’s a great choice of cycling-friendly hotels across many Mediterranean destinations. Your transfer is automatically upgraded to accommodate your bike too, and there’s always 24/7 support if you need it.”

Do you prefer to cycle in a group or on your own?

“Definitely in a group – I’m a very social rider. Sometimes on club trips abroad, I think there are more coffee stops, swim breaks and photo opportunities than actual cycling… but that’s all part of the fun.”

 Sea views or mountain views?

“Mountain views, every time. There’s nothing quite like reaching the top of a long climb and taking in those panoramic views – it’s pure reward. That said, it’s hard to beat a cold beer or an ice cream by the sea after a long day in the saddle.”

Sunrise or sunset ride?

“Sunrise! Nothing beats watching the world wake up – it feels like discovering a secret version of your destination. The roads are quiet, the air is fresh, and there’s that brilliant sense of anticipation for the day ahead.”
