Nestled at nearly 2000m, high in the Tyrolean Alps, Obergurgl’s a popular pick for winter getaways in Austria. The ski area promises varied terrain and the centuries-old village is as authentic as it gets. So, what are you waiting for? With Jet2.com flights to nearby Innsbruck Airport, and the option to add 22kg hold baggage and ski carriage, there’s snow better time to book. One handy all-you-need-to-know guide coming up...
The resort
Obergurgl itself is charming and traditional, home to wooden chalets and an 18th-century church. The village sits at the top of the Ötztal Valley, about a 90-minute drive from Innsbruck Airport. It’s compact and easy to navigate, with everything you could need for a week or more. Two central lift stations, the Hohe Mut and Festkogel gondolas, sit within walking distance of most hotels. Many properties are ski-in, ski-out too! There’s also a handy shuttle bus which is free with a ski pass, so hopping from your hotel to the lifts, or even to neighbouring Hochgurgl, is a doddle. If you’re a non-skier or just dreaming of switching into relax mode, make the most of the resort’s spas. The Hotel Edelweiss & Gurgl Spa offers day access passes, while the Aqua Dome in Längenfeld holds the title as one of Austria’s most spectacular thermal spas.
The slopes
The resort’s lofty location makes it one of the most snow-sure in the region, and you’ll have over 100km of pistes at your ski tips! If you’re a first-timer, you can learn the ropes on the gentle nursery slopes near the village (around the Mahdstuhl lift). Once you’ve perfected those parallel turns, head across to the Festkogel area. Piste pro? Test your mettle on the mogul run from the Hohe Mut summit. On the Hochgurgl side, the Wurmkogl peak’s home to the most hair-raising black. Boarders will love the uncrowded pistes and the efficient lift system means minimal drag lifts. Although there isn’t a large freestyle park, there are natural features aplenty. We’re talking lips, banks and off-piste pockets that let you create your own lines.
The après
When the clock strikes après o’clock, there’s no place better than the Nederhütte. Here, you can listen to live bands, dance on the table and toast your day over a schnapps. Looking for something more laidback? Add Krumpn’s Stadl and the Josl Keller to your evening itinerary. Foodies will be spoilt for choice with dining spots too. Tuck into Tyrolean dishes like käsespätzle, schnitzel and warming goulash. Popular eateries include Edelweiss & Gurgl’s Hohe Mut Alm and Pic-Nic for casual pizzas and pasta. We’re hungry just thinking about it...
