City to summit in twenty minutes? Snow way! Perched above Innsbruck, Nordkette’s a popular pick if you’re looking for a city break and ski getaway rolled into one. And with handy Jet2.com ski flights to Innsbruck Airport, plus the option to add 22kg hold baggage and ski carriage*, it couldn’t be easier to make your way to the mountains this winter.
The resort
The journey begins on the ultra-modern Hungerburg funicular, designed by Zaha Hadid, whisking you from the city to the slopes with futuristic flair. At Seegrube, the mid-station, the atmosphere is relaxed and scenic. Think panoramic terraces, with Innsbruck stretched out below you. Continue up to Hafelekar, and the terrain becomes steeper. Nordkette’s known for its freeride culture and expert terrain, but don’t let that fool you – it has room for all types of skiers and boarders.
The slopes
Nordkette isn’t a large beginner resort, but what it does offer is confidence-building skiing at Seegrube. The gentler blue areas are perfect for practicing turns and adjusting to altitude. Intermediates will find their sweet spot on the wider, cruisier red runs. Piste pro? You’ll be in your element here. In fact, the upper Hafelekar area features some of the steepest marked slopes in the Alps. Just be sure to check the avalanche bulletin daily, wear full avalanche gear if venturing off-piste and hire a guide if you’re exploring the backcountry. Non-skier? Winter walkers can enjoy groomed paths with fantastic views, while sightseers can take the Hafelekar cable car to 2,334m and watch the daredevils drop in. Foodie? Nothing beats tucking into steaming strudel or cosying up over a hot chocolate.
The après
Nordkette may be small in size, but there’s still plenty to get stuck into when it comes to après activities. Come afternoon, the Seegrube terrace transforms into a sun-soaked social hub. You can expect relaxed beats and skiers lounging in deck chairs overlooking the city. It’s the kind of après where you don’t need ski boots to stomp on tables, instead, you can sip a drink while the city lights begin to glow below. But if you are craving more nightlife, just head back into Innsbruck, where bars, pubs and cocktail lounges await. You’ll also want to earmark some time to explore the sights and delights of the city. We’re big fans of the Old Town, where chocolate-box Austrian houses line the streets.
