So, you’ve got your eye on a winter city break? We don’t blame you! Whether you’re visiting one of the Christmas markets or roaming around snow-sprinkled sights, there’s always time for a break in a cosy café or bar. Swap chilly for chilling here...
Rome
From wine cellars to hidden speakeasies, variety is Rome’s middle name. Step back in time and enjoy an aperitif at the Hassler Bar. Furnished with dark wood and gilded mirrors, the setting is just as spectacular as the cocktail menu. Be sure to try signature tipples like the Hassler Fashioned, made with bourbon whiskey, aniseed liqueur, sugar, orange and bitters. The comfy sofas at the Race Club also call for go-slow evenings. Hidden away down a side street, just a stone’s throw from the Colosseum, you could easily walk by it. Don’t be fooled by the entrance – it’s a speakeasy after all!
Prague
There are few places better to hunker down with a warm drink in Prague than the Café Savoy. Get wrapped up in its old-world charm, as smartly dressed waiters serve you toasty treats. Sip a rich hot chocolate and refuel on decadent cakes, ready for another round of sightseeing. On an evening, peel off your layers and be transported to more exotic climes at the Tiki Taky bar. Or why not let the soft sounds of jazz lure you to Café Bar Pilotů?
Barcelona
Hibernating in your hotel room is not on the agenda in the Catalan capital. Take refuge from any cold winter weather in Solange, a luxury bar known for its masterful mixology. For something a little more low-key, check out Le Standard. The floral wallpaper and vintage furniture give it a homely feel. You’ll want to add 33/45 to your bar bucket list too. Sprawling is encouraged on the mismatched armchairs, as is mingling with the locals in this hipster hangout.
Budapest
There are plenty of places where you can escape the bustle and the brr in Budapest. Lámpás is an underground ruin bar which has daily live music and open-mic nights. Fekete Kutya is another characterful pick, with lots of craft beers on tap. Pull up a pew and let the pálinka (fruit brandy) warm you up from the inside out. And don’t miss Hintaló Iszoda, a popular venue with students. They shine a spotlight on local artists and performers, regularly hosting exhibitions.
