Next Generation Airport Security: For now, the current rules apply when you fly

Rules around taking liquids and electrical items through UK airport security are set to change, with airports hoping to phase in the necessary technology upgrades by 2025. Here's everything you need to know…

How will this affect my trip?

Please continue travelling as normal and assume that getting through security will be the same as you're currently used to, unless we tell you otherwise on the day. This means only taking liquids in containers holding 100ml or less, that fit in a clear, resealable plastic bag (no bigger than 20cm x 20cm) to security. The changes will be coming into effect in a phased approach at UK airports, so please don’t assume the new security systems are up and running at your departure airport just yet.

What are the upcoming UK airport security changes?

Rules around taking liquids and electrical items through UK airport security are set to change, with airports hoping to phase in the necessary technology upgrades by 2025. Once those upgrades are complete, customers will be able to leave liquids and electrical items in their hand luggage to go through security. But for now, the current rules apply when you fly. Read on for more information on what this means for you...

We know that different airports will be completing the upgrades at different times, meaning completion dates will vary for each UK airport. As the upgrades are being made, some airports will be running dual security systems, with both the existing and new scanners running at the same time. For this reason, please prepare for security checks as normal – and by that we mean: Any liquids in hand luggage can only be taken through security in containers holding 100ml or less and all liquids must fit in a clear, resealable plastic bag (no bigger than 20cm x 20cm) to go through the hand baggage scanner.

What changes are being made at UK airports?

All UK airports will be required to install new baggage and body scanners which provide 3D images. A number of the airports have said that they hope to have these installed by 2025.

What about overseas airports?

These changes are only being put in place when leaving UK airports, meaning there’s no change to requirements when departing from our airports overseas.

How will I know when anything changes?

We’ll contact you when any changes are made that will impact your trip, but for now, the current rules apply when you fly. You must continue to travel as normal and only carry liquids in containers holding 100ml less that can be put through the security scanners in a clear, resealable plastic bag (no bigger than 20cm x 20cm).
