From soaring mountains to world-famous fjords, Norway is chock-full of pinch-yourself sights. And what’s more, if you book one of our special breaks to Bergen, an all-day trip comes included. Take a look at some of the breathtaking scenery you'll see along the way...
Flåm
If you find yourself in Flåm, the chances are, you’ve travelled there on the famous Flåm railway. Despite only being an hour long, it’s been voted one of the most spectacular rail journeys in the world. Impressive right? En route, you can expect to see some of Norway’s most spellbinding sights, all from the comfort of your carriage.
The chocolate-box village of Flåm itself is certainly awe-inspiring, so much so, that it served as inspiration for the Disney blockbuster Frozen. Alongside the rail trip and boat tour, there are plenty of active pursuits on offer here too, such as kayaking, cycling and hiking.
Gudvangen
Nestled on the banks of the famous Nærøyfjord, is the dinky fjord village of Gudvangen. Its location makes it a great starting point for mountainous meanders, with plenty of hiking trails around the village and beyond. Hikes to Bakkanosi are popular as they offer a bird’s-eye view of the Nærøyfjord, but be sure to pack some sturdy shoes.
A trip to the Viking village is a must on any visit to Gudvangen. Here, you can channel your inner viking, while uncovering Norse history. Hear the stories, taste some viking food and maybe even try your hand at archery!
Nærøyfjord
Prepare for a waterborne adventure like no other when you cruise down the UNESCO-stamped Nærøyfjord. As you watch the scenery glide by and admire the towering mountainside, it’s not hard to understand how this natural spectacle makes UNESCO’s World Heritage list. Along the way, you’ll spot traditional farms and villages peppering the innermost banks and waterfalls plunging into the brackish water.
Aurlandsfjord
Smaller than its neighbour, but just as breathtaking, is the Aurlandsfjord. Cameras at the ready as you prepare to see one of Norway’s most picturesque spots. You’ll also find the fjordside villages of Flåm, Aurland and Undredal here, surrounded by forested mountains.
In Undredal, you’ll experience rural Norway at its best because in this little village, goats outnumber people. If you can navigate around these bearded beauties, then visiting Scandinavia’s smallest stave church and sampling some local goat’s cheese is a must.
Mount Fløyen
The Fløyen Funicular opens a gateway to more of Bergen’s outstanding natural beauty spots and innumerable opportunities for active pursuits. A six-minute ride will take you all the way to the top where there are ample trails through the verdant landscape.
Only a short walk away from the funicular station is Lake Skomakerdiket, where glassy waters are enveloped by pine-green foliage and shores are primed for picnics. You can borrow canoes, paddles and life jackets and the best part is, it’s free of charge.
Mount Ulriken
In Bergen, this mighty mountain takes centre stage! The largest of the city’s seven mountains, it towers over the buildings below and rewards those who reach its summit with spectacular panoramic views. Hiking enthusiasts, pull on your walking boots because it’s 1,333 steps to the top on the famous ‘sherpa steps’. It offers great views the whole way up, so even if you pause for a pit stop, you can still enjoy the stunning scenery. Alternatively, you can take it easy on the cable car, which takes you right to the top, a whopping 634 metres above sea level.
