My top 5 tips for booking the best ski holiday

General Manager for Social Media & Internal Comms Lindsey Phillips spills the beans on how to enjoy the best ski break...

There’s no better way to switch off and blow some cobwebs away than being up a mountain surrounded by snow, fresh air and views to die for. And while everyone in the UK is dealing with miserable rainy weather, you’re getting pumped full of adrenaline and banishing those winter blues with some serious fun (and hopefully doses of vitamin D!).

Of course, I’m talking about a ski holiday. It’s the best thing about the winter season, and for those of you who are considering it for the first time, here are my top 5 tips on booking the best ski holiday ever…

1. Do your research

This is the big one. There’s a lot to consider, and not all ski resorts are the same, so think about what’s important to you and what you’re expecting out of the holiday. Some resorts are better for families and beginners, with plenty of lovely green and blue runs, while some are better for groups and are more lively thanks to plenty of après ski options.

Think about when you want to go (early or late season?) and research what the conditions are likely to be. Resorts that are higher up will generally have better snow (and for longer), and in some places, you can even ski right to your hotel door. Whereas with other resorts, there will be buses and cable cars to consider.

Also think about the country you’re going to and the food you like to eat. The Alps are fantastic for skiing and span across lots of countries, including France, Italy, Switzerland and Austria. All have great resorts with different cuisine, and don’t worry, they all have a version of mulled wine to warm the cockles on the slopes! You’ll be drinking vin chaud in France, vin brulé in Italy or glühwein in Switzerland or Austria!

2. Take lessons

If you’ve never been skiing, get some lessons before you go – even just one! You don’t want the first time you put ski boots and skis on to be when you’re there, as they can be fiddly. You’ll also need to be able to manoeuvre yourself around, which isn’t that simple when you’ve got all your gear on, so it’s better to have had some practice beforehand.

3. Think about clothing well in advance

You need lots of skiwear, so don’t leave it all to the last minute. I’m talking base layers (think thermal leggings and long-sleeved tops), mid-layers like a gilet to go over the base for extra warmth, and a decent jacket that’s appropriate for the activity you’ll be doing. Then there’s salopettes, thick socks, gloves, goggles...  It’s a long list, but it will be worth it when you get to the top of that mountain, I assure you!

Of course, you’ll also need boots, skis, poles (or snowboard) and a helmet – but don’t worry if you don’t have those, as you can easily rent them when you’re there. Also, clothes-wise, ski resorts aren’t very dressy, so you probably won’t need that cocktail dress and heels, just something comfy and warm and plenty of layers for when you’re wandering around outside.

4. Prepare for the weather

If you’re lucky, you’ll have some fabulous blue skies and endless views, so you’ll need sun block and sunglasses. But don’t forget, you’re in the mountains and weather can change easily, so make sure you also have a spare pair of gloves and a hat – it will be cold up there!

5. Get ready to have fun!

There’s nothing better than getting out in the snow for some heart-pumping ski action. And once you’ve had enough for the day, the après ski is where it’s at! You’ll find most of the fun will happen in the afternoon when everyone has finished skiing – or sometimes when you’re still half-way up the mountain in an unassuming ski hut, which can give off serious Ibiza-in-the-snow vibes!

So, if you’ve been thinking about a ski holiday for a while but not quite made it, my advice is to get booking now! Jet2.com fly to all of Europe’s key ski gateways, so the best of the slopes are all within easy reach – what are you waiting for?
