Cartocciata

Big fan of a calzone-style pizza? Then you’re going to love this one. It’s essentially a mini calzone that fits perfectly in your hands to eat on the go. The dough on the outside is soft and squidgy and fillings can include everything from mozzarella, ham, fried aubergine and spinach, and can be made to order so they’re as fresh as can be.

Top tip: Prefer something sweet? You can also find dessert versions of this local delicacy, packed with fresh fruit, cream and even Nutella!

Arancini alla Norma

Arancini, a true staple of the island, has got to be top of the list of must-tries. These flavour-packed rice balls are coated in breadcrumbs then deep-fried to create a crispy and crunchy outer layer. The original recipe features tomato sauce, basil and ricotta cheese but other variations include aubergine, beef mince and peas.

Although traditionally known to be in a spherical shape, the local Sicilian version is more of a teardrop shape with a slight point at the top. Keep your eyes peeled to spot them standing neatly in rows in shop windows.

Fun fact: The first arancini is said to have originated from the buzzy city of Catania, on the east coast of the island.

Crocchè

Want some more deep-fried deliciousness? Of course, you do! This one’s very similar to a potato croquette that we get here in the UK, but it’s jam-packed with rich ingredients and tasty local flavours. Think creamy mashed potatoes, eggs, parmesan and mozzarella. And seasoned with parsley and mint. Meat-lovers can opt for one stuffed with salami or prosciutto ham. They’re even served in a bread roll sometimes – because who doesn’t love double carbs?!

Fun fact: This humble street food snack originates from the 17th century when potatoes became a staple food in Sicily.

Cannoli

Calling all sweet tooths! You can’t visit the mouth-watering island of Sicily and not try one of their most iconic desserts – a cute and crispy cannoli, of course. The original recipe includes a snappable dough shell that’s filled with a sweet ricotta cream cheese. Other varieties include coconut, pistachio, fresh fruit, chocolate and more!

Fun fact: Most people think cannoli is Italian, but in fact, it was born right here on the island to celebrate carnival season hundreds of years ago.

Has all this talk of street food got your taste buds tingling for a trip to Sicily?
