Sachertorte, Austria
Got cocoa connoisseurs for kids? This one’s for them! Decadent sachertorte is a dark choc, two-tier speciality with a layer of apricot jam between. Whipped cream on the side? Go on then.

Madeleines, France
Shell-shaped and dusted with a showering of icing sugar, France’s answer to refined snacking is airy and fluffy. Opening the oven partway through baking gives it its hump in the middle.
Cannoli, Italy
Pistachio, vanilla, salted caramel... whatever your flavour, Sicily’s crispy, tubular dessert is a joy. Prepare for its sweet ricotta filling to be all over mouths and sticky fingers though!

Chimney cake, Hungary
Chimney cake – AKA Kürtőskalács – hails from Hungary and will no doubt be a lip-licking winner. The sweet dough’s rolled around a rope and baked into a unique cylinder shape.
Pastel de nata, Portugal
Encased in thin pastry, the humble egg custard tart native to Portugal is brilliant even as early as breakfast time. It’s light and pairs well with a tea or child-friendly carton of juice.

Honey cake, Greece
You can’t beat a buttery, honey-soaked sponge if you’re after a pick-me-up amid all the sightseeing. Take a bite on the go or tuck in with a fork in a cute local café.
Revani, Turkey
Made from semolina, flavoured with lemon and topped with shavings of desiccated coconut, these rich, syrupy slabs are bound to get a thumbs up! We’ll take two...

Piernik, Poland
Out with the gingerbread man, in with Polish gingerbread cake! Made from brown sugar, cinnamon and even plum jam in some parts, it’s a seasonal staple.
Gugelhupf, Germany
Here's a brioche-like, north German recipe that your brood won’t be able to wait to get their laughing gear around! They’re most commonly lemony or chocolatey.
