Tucked between Mont Blanc and Lake Geneva, this charming alpine town is a French fave. Whether you’re carving your first turns, chasing powder through tree-lined runs or sipping a vin chaud in a cosy chalet, Morzine lays on the lot for families, friends and couples alike. It sits at the heart of the Portes du Soleil ski area, spanning 12 resorts and over 600km of pistes across France and Switzerland. And with handy Jet2.com flights to nearby Geneva and Chambery, you can be swishing down the slopes in no time!
The resort
Morzine’s bursting with character and has everything you could need for a winter getaway. Think artisan bakeries, buzzy bars and ski rental shops by the bucketload. For accommodation, there’s something for everyone. We’re talking boutique chalets, family-friendly hotels, self-catering apartments... the works! Getting around is easy too. The resort is compact enough to wander on foot, and the free ski shuttle system links all the main lifts and accommodation areas. It’s also a fab choice if you’re travelling with non-skiers, with lots to do both on and off the mountain. Who’s up for ice-skating in the village square or some laps at the Parc des Dérêches swimming complex?
The slopes
Morzine is part of the mighty Portes du Soleil ski area, giving you seamless access to both French and Swiss terrain. It’s an intermediate skier’s paradise, with wide, cruisy blues and reds winding through forests. Start your day by taking the Pleney lift, right from the centre of town, and you’ll be instantly connected to a network of runs that flow towards Les Gets. Ideal for families or those warming up their ski legs! For a more testing morning, hop on the Super Morzine gondola to Avoriaz, Morzine’s high-altitude neighbour. From there, the whole Portes du Soleil opens up. Tackle the iconic Swiss Wall (one of Europe’s steepest mogul fields) or explore the beautiful tree-lined trails down to Lindarets and Chatel. Snowboarders and freestylers are well-catered for too. The Burton Stash Park in Avoriaz combines natural features and sculpted snow obstacles, blending freeride and freestyle in the forest.
The après
When the lifts stop for the day, Morzine comes alive in a different way. Start at La Tremplin, right at the bottom of the Pleney lift, where live DJs set the tone. Then, wander into town for a craft beer at Bec Jaune Brewery or catch up about your adventures under fairy lights at Bar Robinson, one of Morzine’s oldest sipping spots. Dinner options range from snug and traditional to contemporary and refined. Try La Chaudanne for fine Savoyard dining in a vaulted wine cellar or L’Etale for hearty portions and great value. And if you’re in the mood for dancing? Café Chaud and Opera are late-night staples, where ski boots are very much part of the dress code.
