Montgenèvre brings some French flair to the Milky Way ski area. It’s a perfect pick for families, beginners and anyone looking to escape the crowds of larger resorts. The high-altitude slopes and average of 300 days of sunshine a year mean bluebird days are definitely on the cards. And it couldn’t be easier to visit, thanks to our handy Jet2.com flights to Turin Airport and the option to add 22kg baggage* and up to 22kg ski carriage*. Tempted? We thought you might be! Here’s everything you need to know before you go...

The resort

Welcome to one of the oldest ski resorts in France, dating back to 1907. Nowadays though, it’s a modern village that’s got all your ski-holiday needs signed, sealed and delivered. It’s small enough to get around on foot, with most accommodation located within easy reach of the lifts — no long hikes in ski boots here! The resort has a mix of traditional chalets and practical apartment blocks, so you’ll find something for every taste and budget. It’s especially popular with families, thanks to its friendly feel, good-value lift passes and reliable snow cover throughout the season. A big bonus? Montgenèvre sits on the French-Italian border, meaning you can ski to Italy for lunch and explore two countries in one trip. Non-skiers are well looked after too. Snowshoeing trails, toboggan runs and even dog-sledding excursions offer alternative ways to explore the winter landscape. And did we mention the cinema and bowling alley?

The slopes

If you’re new to skiing, the local area boasts around 100km of runs, where you can learn the ropes. It’s mostly greens and reds around these parts, with wide-open pistes, gentle gradients and scenic runs through the trees. The Prarial and Chalvet sectors are fab for cruising, and the nursery areas at the base are tailor-made for youngsters. Once you’re feeling more confident, you can make the most of easy access to Italian resorts like Sestriere and Claviere. For snowboarders and freestyle fans, there's a well-maintained snow park too.

The après

Montgenèvre may be quieter than some of its livelier alpine neighbours, but there’s still plenty to do once the lifts stop. A post-ski pint, a gourmet meal, a soak in the spa... the choice is yours. The après-ski scene is laidback, with a handful of bars dotted around the village. Le Graal and Exit Pub are popular spots for a casual drink or to catch some live music. Being right on the border, you can sample both French favourites and Italian classics. Think fondue and tartiflette one night, followed by pasta and pizza the next. Looking to unwind? Durancia Spa is a highlight, featuring pools, saunas and panoramic mountain views.
