Pamukkale, Turkey
Where tiered terraces of thermal springs bathe you in nourishing waters, you’ll find Pamukkale. Limestone stalactites drip down the hillside, creating a slideshow of stunning scenery. Nearby, you’ll also find the ancient ruins of the spa town, Hierapolis. Here, you can bathe in Cleopatra’s own bath, said to have been a gift from Mark Antony. Day trips are available here from Bodrum, Antalya, Dalaman and Izmir, so make sure you add it to your must-visit list!
Meteora, Greece
Holidaying in Halkidiki? Set your sights on the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Meteora. Once you spot this staggering group of mighty peaks and cliffs, crowned by Byzantine monasteries, you’ll soon see why it’s often regarded as the Eighth Wonder of the World! Take some time to soak up the panoramic views and admire the intricate frescoes.
Atlas Mountains, Morocco
It couldn’t be easier to clock up the kilometres roaming around the souks in Morocco. If you want to escape the hustle and bustle though, why not head out to Paradise Valley? It’s part of the High Atlas Mountains – 1,000km of rugged ridges and panoramic passes. You can stop for a dip in the sparkling, turquoise waters of one of the natural pools, so don’t forget your swimwear.
Montserrat, Spain
In the creases and crags of this marvellous mountain range, you’ll find a Benedictine monastery. Enjoy the breathtaking coastal views as you take the cogwheel train up 725m. At the top, it’s all about the far-as-the-eye-can-see panoramas across the national park. Most days, you can hear the beautiful sounds of the Escolania music school, one of Europe’s oldest.
Nærøyfjord, Norway
