Majorca rediscovered

Want to get to know the real Majorca? Come and rediscover it...

Me in soller

Majorca has been a holiday bigwig for decades, and it’s arguably the most typically popular island in the Balearics. Why? Oh, it has plenty to do with its gold-sand beaches, exciting resorts and dreamy scenery, but there’s so much more to unearth while you’re there. Emma, our Destination Manager overseas in Majorca, dishes out the must-sees in just 20 questions…

Palma buildings

1. Where’s the best place to see the sunset?

“Ooh, it’s got to be Sa Muleta Lighthouse, snuggled away in the mountains of Soller, overlooking the Med."

2. Where’s the best place to drink in the views?

“It’s got to be Cap de Formentor – make sure you’ve got a phone or a camera with you, because you’ll want photos from there!”

3. Where’s the best place to take a stroll?

“I really enjoy a walk around Portixol Marina, and you can go all the way to C’an Pastilla along the coastline too. Scattered with beautiful portside cafés and bars for tapas and a cheeky cerveza, it’s just gorgeous there.”

4. What’s the most Instagrammable experience?

“Definitely the Orange Express Train, as it takes you through the Tramuntana Mountains. You’ll go past orange groves en route to Soller, before you hop off to stand in the main square and admire what’s around you. The Church of Saint Bartholomew is well worth a photo as it’s massive and stunning – you'll soon see why this town is one of Majorca’s most famously photographed.”

5. Where’s the best place for brunch?

“Mercat de l’Olivar in the centre of Palma is fantastic. Enjoy fresh oysters and champagne or keep it more budget-friendly and go for the fresh prawns or calamari.”

6. Where’s the best place for cocktails?

“It’s got to be the roof terrace of Hostal Cuba. It’s over in the trendy district of Santa Catalina, where you'll get panoramic views of Palma Cathedral and the marina as a bonus.”

7. Where’s the best place to go shopping?

“The bustling Jaime III is the main shopping street in Palma – it boasts all the main high-street brands like Mango, Zara and Stradivarius. Then you can easily walk from there into the Old Town, where you’ll find loads of local designer boutiques. And don’t forget Louis Vuitton if you’ve got a bigger budget!”

8. Where’s the coolest beach?

“People generally compare Es Trenc to beaches in the Caribbean. Think crystal-clear, blue water, shallow spots and soft, white sand.”

9. Where’s the best place to experience local tradition?

“At the market in Sineu, you can buy local produce including fruit and veg, handwoven baskets and clothes.”

10. Where’s the best place to dine?

“I adore El Camino in Palma. You can sit down to counter-style eating, and I really rate the delicious dishes such as pluma Iberica (pork fillet) and buñuelos de bacalao (cod bites).”

11. Where’s the best place for music-lovers?

"Try one of the many bars in the Santa Catalina district of Palma and you can’t go too far wrong. But Kaelum Club in particular plays a huge mix of music to suit all ages.”

12. Where can you find something quirky to do?

“For me, it’s a little bar in Palma called La Viniloteca. You can drink wine and play vinyl of your choice in a small cave-style setting – so cool.”

13. Where’s the best place to grab a souvenir?

“Go behind the cathedral in central Palma and you’ll find a huge selection of souvenir shops from the standard fridge magnets to cool artwork. Stick No Bills sells retro posters of some of the island’s most iconic sights.”

14. Where’s the best place for traditional Majorcan food?

“For meat-lovers, Mesón Ca´n Pedro, Génova does a great steak with Padron peppers! Celler Sa Premsa, in the centre of Palma, serves up local dishes such as tumbet (like ratatouille), frito mallorquin (roasted meat in peppers and spices, fried with potatoes and veg), and suckling pig. Fish fans, it's all about Restaurante Ca n'Eduardo in front of the cathedral – they do sea bass baked in local sea salt.”

Bacalo and calcots

15. Where’s the best place to play golf?

“Golf Son Gual Mallorca is an 18-hole course with its own Mediterranean restaurant for after your rounds.”

16. What are the best sights to tick off?

“I’ve already mentioned Palma Cathedral, Soller and Cap de Formentor, but there’s so much more! Vineyards in the middle of the island in idyllic towns like Binissalem and Santa Maria del Camí are well worth a visit. Plus, Sa Colabra by car is a stunner. For old-school charm, Valldemossa and Deia are the ones. And Porto Cristo Marina shouldn’t be missed if you enjoy being by the water.”

17. What are the best sports and activities to try?

“There are so many ways you can spend your days in Majorca. For starters, you could give windsurfing a go in Puerto Pollensa, or how about hitting one of the many golf courses? Cycling here is fab too – there are some staggering routes, especially the 312 and Sa Calobra. Stick to dry land and hike in the Tramuntana Mountains or around the Boquer Valley – that's in the north of the island. Hot air balloon rides are also big here too. And on the water, there are paddleboarding opportunities, plus you could rent jet-skis. If that wasn’t enough, football fans can catch Majorca’s own La Liga team, RCD Mallorca, at the local stadium during the season.”

18. Where’s the best place to try the local wine?

“It has to be in one of the many vineyards – Bodegas Macià Batle in the pretty village of Santa Maria is a great call. There, you can take a mini train around the winery to learn about the process of making the different types of wine. Then you'll finish up in a country house for a tasting."

Valdemossa

19. Where’s the best place for a day trip?

“You should consider doing a day trip to Menorca, so that you can tick off two bucket-list Balearic islands in one stay! The ferry takes just under an hour.”

20. Where’s the best place to dine harbourside?

“Puerto Portals is a small port which has some really huge yachts! There are also some cool bars to enjoy a cocktail in around there, or you can dine in restaurants like Janina or Ritzi.”
