Tucked high in the French Alps, La Plagne’s a well-known winter playground. Whether you’re strapping on skis for the first time, a piste pro or simply soaking up the mountain views with a chocolat chaud in hand, there’s something for everyone here. And with handy Jet2.com flights to the nearby airports of Chambery, Geneva and Lyon – you could be swishing down the slopes in no time.
The resort
Part of the vast Paradiski area, La Plagne boasts an impressive mix of terrain, reliable snow conditions and a welcoming atmosphere that suits families, groups and solo travellers alike. It’s not a single village but a network of interconnected resorts, each sitting at different altitudes and offering its own style. Some areas are purpose-built with convenience in mind, giving you immediate access to lifts and pistes, while others feel more traditional, with chalet-style buildings and a quieter pace. With many sections sitting above 2,000m, snow conditions are consistently reliable throughout the season. Getting around’s a doddle too. The lift system is well thought out, and free shuttle buses connect the different villages, making it easy to explore without a car.
The slopes
For newbies, this resort is a snow-brainer. There are several ski schools and six dedicated beginner areas, so you can learn at your own pace. Then, when you’re feeling confident, you can set off and conquer the network of blues. Intermediates will be in their element too, especially on the reds down to Plagne Montalbert. And don’t miss the 2km-long Tunnel run with its colourful lights and music. If all that still sounds too chilled for you, you can hop on the Vanoise Express cable car over to Les Arcs to explore the other half of the ski area. The 7km Aiguille Rouge is particularly breathtaking, as is hiring a guide and exploring the Bellecôte glacier. Freestyle fanatic? Head for the snow park in Belle Plagne, complete with an air bag and boardercross course. There’s even plenty for non-skiers to get stuck into, like snowshoe trails, toboggan runs and spa afternoons.
The après
As the lifts close, La Plagne shifts gears, and this is where the resort’s personality really comes alive. The après-ski scene is varied, laying on everything from lively terraces to cosy spots where you can unwind after a long day. For those looking to celebrate, places like La Bergerie and Igloo Igloo are at the heart of the action, with music, live performances and dancing. If you prefer somewhere with a classic pub feel, Bar La Mine in Plagne 1800 is your best bet. And when it comes to dining, La Cantine and Le 4810 serve up hearty, alpine food. Who’s for a fondue?
